This book is a collection of 12 papers dealing with manipulation and ideology in the 20th century, mostly with reference to political speeches by the leaders of major totalitarian regimes, but also addressing propaganda within contemporary right-wing populism and western ideological rhetoric. This book aims at bringing together researchers in the field of ideology reproduction in order to better understand the underlying mechanisms of speaker-favourable belief inculcation through language use. The book covers a wide range of theoretical perspectives, from psychosocial approaches and discourse analysis to semantics and cognitive linguistics and pragmatics. The book s central concern is to provide not only a reference work with up-to-date information on the analysis of manipulation in discourse but also a number of tools for the scholar, some of them being developed within theories originally not designed to address belief-change through language interpretation. Foreword by Frans van Eemeren.

This book examines how sociopolitical and intercultural ideologies surrounding globalisation and neoliberalism are constructed and negotiated in travel documentaries, focusing on the role of the BBC in reproducing neo-imperialistic and neoliberal values. It argues that these documentaries naturalise the values underpinning globalisation and justify the exploitation of resources from the United Kingdom and the West at the expense of developing countries, reflecting forms of neo-imperialism. After discussing the role of the BBC as a public service provider and the research’s theoretical and methodological foundations, three case studies explore the semiotic and cognitive processes involved in media effects. Through an interdisciplinary approach integrating multimodal critical discourse analysis, audience research, and relevance theory, the book contributes to discussions on the application of multimodality theory to social concerns and addresses academic communities in media studies, critical discourse studies, and semiotics. This book will interest scholars in multimodality, critical discourse analysis, media and communication studies, and semiotics.

This book presents six related studies that shed light on hateful speech, both verbal and multisemiotic, in a postcolonial setting relevant to countries of the Global South, such as Brazil. It offers a body of rich empirical analysis of linguistic, discursive and political-ideological data. Analytical results show how online and offline attacks and related forms of resistance occur and how they involve a complex tangle of national and international flows, intersecting and re-twining themes, narratives, and images in the public arena. Thereby, the book provides insights into how disruptive global flows fuse and transform local flows into tangled and fluid glocal issues, as shown in the sexist and misogynist violence that permeates political-ideological struggles in contemporary Brazil and beyond.

The Politics And Rhetoric Of Collective Remembering written by John E. Richardson and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-11-15 with Social Science categories.
This book critically examines the ways that collective pasts are commemorated and contested in a wide variety of national locations, media and genres. Collective remembering is a dynamic process, through which narratives about the past, about ‘us’ and ‘them’ as well as beliefs, values and affective conditions contained in these stories, are produced and reproduced. This facilitates room for not only the creation of unity but also the potential for contestation and conflict, given that different interpretations of the past are often vehicles for opposing political interests. This book reflects the geographical breadth and empirical depth of the field of collective remembering. Foregrounding the idea that collective remembering always entails contestation, individual chapters explore the field of remembrance and its various genres – including murals, memorials, museums, newspaper reports, speeches, textbooks, tourist tours and the work of community activists – in countries as diverse as Australia, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Portugal, South Africa, the UK and the USA. This volume will be of interest to advanced students and researchers in Critical Discourse Studies, Memory Studies, Rhetoric and Communications. The chapters in this book were originally published in Critical Discourse Studies.

Becoming effective hunters of manipulative communicative moves is far from an easy capacity to develop. This book aims at offering a guide to the most dangerous traps of deceptive language as triggered by implicit communication strategies such as presupposition, implicature, topicalization and vague expressions. A look at different contexts of language use highlights some of the most remarkable implications of using indirect speech and of how it affects the correct comprehension of a message. Within the remit of communication and pragmatics studies, this work marks an advancement in the direction of delving into the linguistic manifestations of manipulative discourse, its most common contexts of use and the educational paths that can be undertaken to master it in everyday interactions.

Critical Discourse Studies (CDS) is an exciting research enterprise in which scholars are concerned with the discursive reproduction of power and inequality. However, researchers in CDS are increasingly recognising the need to investigate the cognitive dimensions of discourse and context if they want to fully account for any connection between language, legitimisation and social action. This book presents a collection of papers in CDS concerned with various ideological discourses. Analyses are firmly rooted in linguistics and cognition constitutes a major focus of attention. The chapters, which are written by prominent researchers in CDS, come from a broad range of theoretical perspectives spanning pragmatics, cognitive psychology and cognitive linguistics. The book is essential reading for anyone working at the cutting edge of CDS and especially for those wishing to explore the central place that cognition must surely hold in the relationship between discourse and society.

Spotlighting case studies of manipulation practices at the onset of the Covid-19 crisis in different countries and socio-political circumstances, the authors expose context-specific discourse and argumentation strategies of 'infodemics’ (misleading information and fake news), public policy mismanagement, deceptive online and offline communication tactics, and conspiracy narratives, which end up disrupting community social cohesion. In addition to targeting manipulation-driven dissent across discourse genres through corpus-based investigations, a major strength of this volume consists in debunking manipulation while foregrounding compelling acts of counter-manipulation. The volume’s breadth of topics, depth of analytical insights and range of methodological frameworks provide unique perspectives by capturing crisis-related manipulations across a worldwide political and cultural spectrum (Austria, Brazil, China, the Czech Republic, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States), with a focus on the scale and extent of multifaceted repercussions. Reaching beyond the boundaries of pragmatics and discourse analysis, this book should be a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners of rhetoric, argumentation, media studies, social and political sciences.

CDS is a multifarious field constantly developing different methodological frameworks for analysing dynamically evolving aspects of language in a broad range of socio-political and institutional contexts. This volume is a cutting-edge, interdisciplinary account of these theoretical and empirical developments. It presents an up-to-date survey of Critical Discourse Studies (CDS), covering both the theoretical landscape and the analytical territories that it extends over. It is intended for critical scholars and students who wish to keep abreast of the current state of the art. The book is divided into two parts. In the first part, the chapters are organised around different methodological perspectives for CDS (history, cognition, multimodality and corpora, among others). In the second part, the chapters are organised around particular discourse types and topics investigated in CDS, both traditionally (e.g. issues of racism and gender inequality) and only more recently (e.g. issues of health, public policy, and the environment). This is, altogether, an essential new reference work for all CDS practitioners.
