Excerpt from Manual of Stories It is the most comprehensive book that has yet been written. It covers all the aspects of the subject: the value of stories; the kinds of stories children like at different ages; devices for making stories effective; picture-stories; dramatized stories; the relations of stories to play; the use of stories in building character; stories in the home, the school and the church; professional story-telling, etc. Part II is devoted to the first detailed description yet printed of the remarkable system of bottle-doll story telling. The list of sources for stories is the most extensive yet compiled. The first classified list of stories for character-build ing ever prepared is here. Excerpt from The Contemporary Short Story: A Practical Manual A distinguished British critic, Professor Hugh Walker, remarks: There is no other form Of literature in which America is so eminent as in the writing of short stories. This dictum alone is sufficient justification for introducing a course in this subject into every college in the land. Not only is a better understanding and appreciation Of the finest short stories fostered by such a course, but not a few students find themselves able to write tales that are accepted by reputable American periodicals if not during their undergraduate years, at any rate Shortly afterward. Writing fiction for the magazines is both an art and a business. This volume accordingly aims to teach promis ing young authors, whether in or out Of college, how to write stories that shall be marketable as well as artistic. It attempts to state succinctly, and as clearly as may be, some fundamental principles of short-story writing. These principles are based upon somewhat extensive reading of short fiction in English, both classic and contemporary; Of a pretty large number of manuscripts submitted to important periodicals; and of most of the critical works on the short story. Many of the pages are written from the editorial standpoint. I have not attempted to set up an impracticable ideal on the one hand, nor to concede too much to the lower range of popular taste on the other. Excerpt from Writing for the Press: A Manual After you learn, it is just as easy to write good English as bad English. Why not learn? In return for a little trouble at the start you will stand higher in the estimation of all educated people and will not stand lower in the estimation of the uneducated. Perhaps only one man in a hundred will appreciate your good English, but is he not the only man in the hundred whose appreciation is worth caring for? Excerpt from New Sloan Readers Manual The New Sloan Readers Manual has been prepared as a guide for teachers in developing the plan and purpose of The New Sloan Readers. The use of the Manual is not essential to this system of teaching reading; but the author believes that the suggestions here included will be found helpful, and will smooth the path for teachers who are using the Sloan method for the first time. It should be understood, however, that the exercises and drills described are merely suggestions for preliminary or supplementary work. While the author has called attention to some of the fundamental principles on which the teaching of reading should be based, she has not attempted to include a treatise on the subject in this Manual. So many excellent books on the teaching of reading are available that further discussion seems superfluous. Such books also contain many valuable suggestions for story work, picture work, and dramatization for all of which material may be found in these Readers. But the essentials of the plan and the material for carrying it out are to be found in The New Sloan Readers themselves. The Manual is intended merely as an aid in the use of the books. Excerpt from Textile Designers' Pocket Manual As this work is intended for the de signer alone, I have confined myself chie y to that department. Designing is probably the most ancient of all the arts. Primitive man, as we understand, designed and made his first garment in the garden of Eden. We find as time moved on that the innate vanity of the human species began to show it self ih the addition of various orna ments to the dress, and thus begun, designing has been more and more developed as ages have rolled by, each designer showing his individual ity in the construction of innumerable articles designed for useful and orna mental purposes; and textile design has ever been a leading art. As a witness thereof, take the tapestries of the Middle Ages, some of which show most artistic conceptions in de sign and execution; also take the shawls of India. Consider the pres ent age. Excerpt from Play-Making a Manual of Craftsmanship This book is, to all intents and purposes, entirely new. No considerable portion of it has already appeared, although here and there short passages and phrases from articles of bygone years are embedded - indistinguishably I hope - in the text. I have tried, wherever it was possible, to select my examples from published plays, which the student may read for himself, and so check my observations. One reason, among others, which led me to go to Shakespeare and Ibsen for so many of my illustrations, was that they are the most generally accessible of playwrights. If the reader should feel that I have been overlavish in the use of footnotes, I have two excuses to allege. The first is that more than half of the following chapters were written on shipboard, and in places where I had scarcely any books to refer to; so that a great deal had to be left to subsequent enquiry and revision. The second is that several of my friends, dramatists and others, have been kind enough to read my manuscript, and to suggest valuable afterthoughts.
