Non-equilibrium thermodynamics is a relatively new field of research, and one which is also becoming increasingly important in engineering applications. However, despite the many approaches developed in recent decades, they all raise questions from a mathematical point of view, for instance on the proper definitions of initial and boundary conditions, analytical and numerical solution methods, and geometrical background. These questions cover numerous topics, including the mathematical analysis of various thermodynamic approaches, the investigation of the resulting governing equations, symmetry analysis of the solutions, and how the numerical methods can be built on the geometrical background. The aim of this Special Issue is to discuss and present up-to-date problems that may not be constrained to the previously mentioned aspects but must be connected to non-equilibrium thermodynamics. Thus, in the present Special Issue we aim to present the open mathematical questions on and characteristics of different thermodynamic approaches.

The problem of deriving irreversible thermodynamics from the re versible microscopic dynamics has been on the agenda of theoreti cal physics for a century and has produced more papers than can be digested by any single scientist. Why add to this too long list with yet another work? The goal is definitely not to give a gen eral review of previous work in this field. My ambition is rather to present an approach differing in some key aspects from the stan dard treatments, and to develop it as far as possible using rather simple mathematical tools (mainly inequalities of various kinds). However, in the course of this work I have used a large number of results and ideas from the existing literature, and the reference list contains contributions from many different lines of research. As a consequence the reader may find the arguments a bit difficult to follow without some previous exposure to this set of problems.

The linear polaron model is an excellent example of an exactly soluble, yet nontrivial polaron system. It serves as a trial system or zero-level approximation in many sophisticated methods of polaron investigation. This book analyzes, in particular, the possibility of reduction of the full polaron Hamiltonian to the linear one, and introduces a special method of calculating thermodynamical characteristics based on the calculation of the averages of T-products. This T-product formalism seems to be a more convenient way of doing similar calculations involving Feynman's path integral approach.This book follows a step-by-step approach, from comparatively simple physical ideas to a clear understanding of sophisticated mathematical tools of investigation in modern polaron physics. In six lectures aspects of modern non-equilibrium thermodynamics of discrete systems as well as continuum theoretical concepts are represented. Starting out with survey and introduction, state spaces are defined, the existence of internal energy is investigated, and Clausius inequality including negative absolute temperature is derived by diagram technique. Non-equilibrium contact quantities, such as contact temperature — the dynamic analogue of thermostatic temperature — and chemical potentials are phenomenologically defined and quantumstatistically founded. Using Clausius inequality the existence of non-negative entropy production is proved which allows to formulate a dissipation inequality in continuum thermodynamics. The transition between thermodynamics of discrete systems and continuum thermodynamics with respect to contact quantities is considered. Different possibilities of exploiting the dissipation inequality for getting constraints for constitutive equations are discussed. Finally hyperbolic heat conduction in non-extended thermodynamics is treated.
