This thesis describes the measurement of the direct CP violation in the b → sc$ar{c}$ transition using the decay B+ → J/?K+, and in the b → dc$ar{c}$ transition using the decay B+ → J/??+. The decays of B+ mesons are reconstructed in approximately 2.8 fb-1 of data recorded by D0 detector in 2002-2007 during Run II of Fermilab Tevatron collider. Using the unbinned likelihood fit, a signal of 40,222 ± 242 of B+ → J/?K+ and 1,578 ± 119 of B+ → J/??+ events is obtained. The corresponding direct CP violation asymmetries are measured to be ACP(B+ → J/?(1S)K+) = +0.0077 ± 0.0061(stat.) ± 0.0027(syst.), and ACP(B+ → J/?(1S)?+) = - 0.089 ± 0.081(stat.) ± 0.028(syst.). The result on ACP (B+ → J/?(1S)K+) is consistent with the 2007 world average and is the most precise measurement of this asymmetry, with uncertainty approaching the level of the Standard Model prediction. The result on ACP (B+ → J/?(1S)?+) constitutes the first measurement of this asymmetry at the hadron collider, with uncertainty at the level of the 2007 world average. The measurement presented in this thesis has become possible due to the sophisticated online and offline tracking/vertexing implemented at D0, and the regular reversal of the polarities of the D0 detector magnets.

Over the last few years, the B factories have established the Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa mechanism of CP violation in the Standard Model through the study of the decays of B mesons. The focus of Belle and BaBar has now expanded to the search for signatures of new physics beyond the Standard Model, particularly through examination of flavor-changing neutral-current transitions, which proceed through diagrams involving virtual loops. These decays are suppressed in the Standard Model, increasing sensitivity to new-physics effects but decreasing branching fractions. Exploiting large and growing datasets, BaBar and Belle have made many measurements in loop decays where a b quark transitions to an s quark, observing hints of possible deviations from Standard Model expectations in CP-violating measurements.

The authors measure the time-dependent CP asymmetry parameters in B0 → K+K-K0 based on a data sample of approximately 277 million B-meson pairs recorded at the Y(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B-meson Factory at SLAC. They reconstruct two-body B0 decays to ?(1020)K$0top{S}$ and ?(1020)K$0top{L}$. Using a time-dependent maximum-likelihood fit, they measure sin2?eff(?K0) = 0.48 ± 0.28 ± 0.10, and C(?K0) = 0.16 ± 0.25 ± 0.09, where the first error is statistical, and the second is systematic. They also present measurements of the CP-violating asymmetries in the decay B0 → f0(→ ?+?-)K$0top{S}$. The results are obtained from a data sample of 209 x 106 Y(4S) → B$ar{B}$ decays, also collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC. From a time-dependent maximum-likelihood fit they measure the mixing-induced CP violation parameter S(f0(980)K$0top{S}$) = - sin 2?efff0(980)K$0top{S}$ = -0.95$+0.32top{-0.23}$ ± 0.10 and the direct CP violation parameter C(f0(980)K$0top{S}$) = - 0.24 ± 0.31 ± 0.15, where the first errors are statistical and the second systematic. Finally, they present a measurement of the branching fraction of the decay B0 → f0(→ ?+?-)K$0top{S}$. From a time-dependent maximum likelihood fit to a data sample of 123 x 106 Y(4S) → B$ar{B}$ decays they find 93.6 ± 13.6 ± 6.4 signal events corresponding to a branching fraction of ?(B0 → f0(980)(→ ?+?-)K0) = (6.0 ± 0.9 ± 0.6 ± 1.2) x 10-6, where the first error is statistical, the second systematic, and the third due to model uncertainties.

We constrain the apex of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity triangle with measurements of B → K*? amplitudes from analyses of B0 → K+?-?0 and B0 → KS?+?- decays. This constraint is consistent with the world average. The B0 → K+?-?0 decay mode is reconstructed from a sample of 454 million B0$ar{B}$ 0 events collected by the BABAR detector at SLAC. We measure direct CP violation in B0 → K*+?- decays at the level of 3? when measurements from both B0 → K+?-?0 and B0 → KS?+?- decays are combined.

The BABAR experiment at SLAC provides an opportunity for measurement of CP violation in B decays. A measurement of time-dependent CP violating asymmetries using exclusive B meson decays where the b quark decays to c{bar c}d (including B° 2!D*D*− and B° 2!D*{sup ±}D{sup {-+}} decays) is presented here. This is the first measurement of CP violation in a mode sensitive to the Unitarity Triangle parameter sin2[beta] outside of decays containing charmonium. It provides a comparison to measurements of sin2[beta] using b 2!c{bar c}s, and permits an observation into potential new physics sources of CP violation, such as supersymmetry, via differences between these measurements and those of B° 2!J/[psi] K{sub S}° as statistics of reconstructed neutral B decays to D{sup (*)+} D{sup (*)-} increase. The measured value of the time-dependent CP violating asymmetries are: S = 0.38 ± 0.88(stat) ± 0.12(syst) and C = -0.30 ± 0.50(stat) ± 0.13(syst) for B° 2!D*− D; S = -0.43 ± 1.41(stat) ± 0.23(syst) and C = 0.53 ± 0.74(stat) ± 0.15(syst) for B° 2!D*+ D−; and S = -0.05 ± 0.45(stat) ± 0.05(syst) and C = 0.12 ± 0.30(stat) {+-} 0.05(syst) for B° 2!D*− D+; where S corresponds to CP violation in the interference of mixing and decay and C corresponds to CP violation in decay.

In a universe dominated by matter, the source of CP violation may explain one of the greatest mysteries in particle physics: what happened to the antimatter? The Standard Model successfully describes CP violation in the B+ and Bd0 systems, yet insufficiently accounts for the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry. The Standard Model predicts a small value of CP violation in the Bs0 meson system, which has only recently been experimentally tested. A measurement of large, anomalous CP violation in the Bs0 system would be a clear indication of new physics sources beyond the Standard Model. This dissertation describes a study of CP violation in approximately 2000 Bs0 → J/?? decays reconstructed in a 2.8 fb-1 data sample collected by the D0 Run II detector at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois. This data was provided by p$ar{p}$ collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV delivered by the Tevatron accelerator between April 2002 and August 2007. Flavor-tagged Bs0 → J/?(?+?-)?(K+K-) decays and an angular analysis are used to study the time evolution of the final state angular distributions. From this analysis, we measure the width difference between the heavy and light mass eigenstates, BsL and BsH , to be ??s = 0.19 ± 0.07 and the CP-violating phase ?s = -0.57-0.30+0.24.

CP violation is one of the most subtle effects in the Standard Model of particle physics and may be the first clue to the physics that lies beyond. Charge conjugation, C, and parity, P, are symmetries of particle interactions. C corresponds to the operation of replacing a particle by its antiparticle, while P is the operation of mirror reflection. Before 1956, it was believed that these were also symmetries of the interactions of elementary particles. In 1956, C S Wu found evidence for P violation in the weak interaction. Theorists proposed that the combination of CP would be a symmetry of the weak interaction. In 1964, Christenson, Cronin, Fitch and Turlay found the first evidence for the violation of CP symmetry in the decays of kaons.Although Kobayashi and Maskawa then showed how the Standard Model can accommodate the observed CP violation, Wolfenstein pointed out that it is also possible that there is a new interaction in addition to the usual four, called the superweak interaction, which is responsible for the asymmetry. To test this idea, the observation of a different type of asymmetry, called direct CP violation, is required; in the kaon sector, very precise measurements of the ratio of kaon decay rates are necessary. In B decay modes where a second order weak process whimisically named “penguin” interferes with another suppressed, first order “tree” amplitude, it may also be possible to observe these direct CP-violating effects.B physics and CP violation is now one of the major growth areas in high energy physics. Nearly every major high energy physics laboratory now has a project underway to observe the large CP asymmetries expected in the B sector and to test the consistency of the Standard Model. The unitarity of the Kobayashi-Maskawa mixing matrix in the Standard Model implies the existence of three phases, called alpha, beta and gamma, which can be determined by the measurements of CP asymmetries in B decays. About 200 participants gathered in Hawaii in March 1997 to discuss the progress in the field, and this important book constitutes the proceedings of that conference.
