Based on a year’s research from within a Brazilian slum, this study follows a series of unemployed women who watch up to six hours of telenovelas a day, often in the midst of arduous physical labour in the home. The women suffer in relation to their bodies, but simultaneously invest in a masochistic glorification of suffering that links their lives to the soap operas, revealing disturbing valuations of the female body that traverse reality and fiction. Through its exploration of this daily integration of real suffering and fictional glamour and wealth, ‘Body Parts on Planet Slum’ reveals how fantasy and social exclusion can together induce a form of psychological survivalism, enabling these women to reconfigure the central features of their existence – their suffering, pleasure, sexuality and embodiment.

This book challenges white and Western feminist approaches to embodied politics, or the use of the body in everyday enactments of resistance, while mapping transgressive performances of femininities by the funkeiras, marginalized women and transfeminine people of color artists in Brazilian favela funk. Often studied from a white feminist perspective, embodied politics reflects debates about agency and structural change that are generally applicable to white women in the West. Concurrently, studies of femininity tend to universalize experiences of gender oppression encountered by white women to women across the globe. In this work, the author offers a transnational perspective on the performative force of embodied politics as a possible means to disrupt white, classist heteropatriarchal structures that oppress particularly poor women and transfeminine people of color in Brazil. This project has a threefold goal: first, it challenges the theoretical shortcomings of white feminist approaches to embodied politics, providing instead a transfeminista take on the concept. Secondly, this project aims to shed light on how traditional methodological approaches have hindered nuanced understandings of women and people of color and their performances. Third and finally, by challenging and re-envisioning the potential of embodied politics from a transnational perspective, the text intends to contribute to the field of critical intercultural communication's growing but still limited research around bodies and performance, especially of those who are marginalized in global contexts.

Partindo do contexto da instalação de UPPs (Unidades de Polícia Pacificadora) nas favelas do Rio de Janeiro para "salvaguardar" a segurança da cidade durante megaeventos esportivos (como a Copa do Mundo de 2014 e as Olimpíadas de 2016), Renata Souza acompanha a experiência cotidiana na favela da Maré e demonstra como a política de "pacificação" desconhece a dinâmica comunitária da favela. A partir da hipótese de um espírito comunitário na Maré, a autora investiga iniciativas independentes de comunicação e cultura dos jovens mareenses (de que são exemplos o jornal O Cidadão, a página virtual Maré Vive, o aplicativo Nós Por Nós, o bloco Se Benze Que Dá, o Sarau da Roça e a feira de trocas Maré 0800), além de suas vivências pessoais como cria da favela, para mostrar uma juventude que resiste culturalmente para existir socialmente. A obra, publicada pela primeira vez em 2018, é uma adaptação da tese de doutorado da autora sobre a resistência da juventude negra à militarização da vida. O livro traz ainda um conjunto de textos escritos em homenagem a Marielle Franco, com quem a autora trabalhou e conviveu por cerca de vinte anos, sendo inclusive chefe de seu gabinete na Câmara dos Vereadores do Rio de Janeiro, até sua execução sumária, em março de 2018.

Dores que libertam: falas de mulheres das favelas da Maré, no Rio de Janeiro, sobre violências é uma coletânea de artigos que, nesta primeira edição, conta com o financiamento da Capes e resulta de iniciativas (pesquisa e intervenção artística) realizadas no âmbito do projeto "Cidades saudáveis, seguras e com equidade de gêneros: perspectivas transnacionais sobre violência urbana contra mulheres do Rio de Janeiro e em Londres", financiado por Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) e Newton Fund. O estudo foi realizado entre novembro de 2016 e abril de 2018, a partir da parceria entre a Escola de Serviço Social (UFRJ), a Organização Não Governamental denominada Redes de Desenvolvimento da Maré, o People's Palace Projects (Queen Mary University of London) e o King's College London University. Os capítulos aqui publicados apresentam resultados da referida pesquisa realizada com mais de 850 mulheres na Maré, maior conjunto de favelas no Rio de Janeiro, e, também, com profissionais e gestores de serviços públicos e ONGs que atuam na proteção dessas mulheres. Foram utilizados diferentes métodos de pesquisa e coleta de dados, que contribuíram para a compreensão do fenômeno em um contexto marcado pela violência urbana e estigmatizações diversas. Algumas conclusões alcançadas no âmbito desta pesquisa apontam para a necessidade de qualificação dos serviços de atendimento disponíveis a essas mulheres, e de segurança para a tomada de providências em busca de seus direitos no campo do acesso à justiça e às demais dimensões de proteção. A coletânea conta, também, com o depoimento de cinco assistentes de pesquisa de campo, que relataram a experiência de realizar 801 visitas domiciliares, em 15 favelas da Maré. A pesquisa teve como um de seus desdobramentos a instalação artística denominada SCAR (cicatriz), realizada no festival internacional denominado Women of the World (WOW), no Southbank Centre, em Londres, no início de 2018. Todo o processo de confecção das narrativas, informações e análises que nortearam este estudo está também aqui relatados. Há, ainda, e merece destaque especial, a contribuição das pesquisadoras do Reino Unido, com o artigo que versa sobre a experiência de mulheres brasileiras moradoras de Londres que vivenciaram dinâmicas violentas, complexificadas pela condição de imigrantes. No Brasil, onde os dados sobre diferentes formas de violência contra a mulher, em particular a violência doméstica, são alarmantes, este livro contribui para a reflexão de todas e todos as/os envolvidas/os no processo de enfrentamento desse fenômeno. Rio de Janeiro's favelas have become well-known sites of gang and police violence. Since the 1970s, dangerous networks between drug traffickers and corrupt state actors have transformed these poor neighborhoods into sites of armed conflict and political repression, limiting residents' ability to speak out against violence or demand their democratic rights. Despite these challenges, nonviolent politics remains an integral element in Cidade de Deus--City of God--one of Rio's most dangerous and famous favelas. In Activism under Fire, Anjuli Fahlberg provides an original account of how conflict activism operates in Cidade de Deus. Drawing on fieldwork, virtual ethnography, and participatory action research, Fahlberg documents how activists strategically navigate local constraints and opportunities--including gendered governing dynamics and racialized practices of solidarity--to create space for non-violent governance amid armed repression. By working within urban, national, and transnational political networks and social movements, local activists bring resources into their neighborhood and protest violence while avoiding dangerous alliances. Activism under Fire demonstrates that non-violent collective action is possible amid extreme poverty and violence, and shows what strategies enable it to survive and effect political change. In so doing, Fahlberg reveals the possibilities for collective action in violent and chaotic democratic states, not only in Latin America, but throughout the world.

In Rio de Janeiro’s favelas, traffickers assert power through conspicuous displays of wealth and force, brandishing high-powered guns, gold jewelry, and piles of cash and narcotics. Police, for their part, conduct raids reminiscent of action films or video games, wearing masks and riding in enormous armored cars called "big skulls." Images of these spectacles circulate constantly in local, national, and global media, masking everyday forms of violence, prejudice, and inequality. The Spectacular Favela offers a rich ethnographic examination of the political economy of spectacular violence in Rocinha, Rio’s largest favela. Based on more than two years of residence in the community, the book explores how entangled forms of violence shape everyday life and how that violence is, in turn, connected to the market economy. Erika Robb Larkins shows how favela violence is produced as a marketable global brand. While this violence is projected in disembodied form through media, the favela is also sold as an embodied experience through the popular practice of favela tourism. The commodification of the favela becomes a form of violence itself; favela violence is transformed into a commercially viable byproduct of a profit-driven war on drugs, which serves to keep the poor marginalized. This book tells the story of how traffickers, police, cameras, tourists, and even anthropologists come together to create what the author calls the "spectacular favela."
