"Sleep plays a crucial role in our waking lives, and we need to start paying it more attention. The latest research tells us that it's essential for learning and memory, for mental health and physical well-being, and yet we tend to only think about it when it's proving a struggle. Nodding Off leads you on a fascinating journey through the science of sleep as it evolves throughout our lives; from babies to teenagers, from middle age to the later years of our life, there are constantly new challenges to our sleep. Based on knowledge accumulated over almost two decades as a sleep researcher, Professor Alice Gregory shares real-life stories and interviews with other sleep experts to find the answers to questions, such as: Why do so many adolescents enjoy lying in at the weekends? Why do children experiencing anxiety, behavioural problems or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder so often have co-occurring sleep problems? Why are scientists turning to sleep disorders such as sleep paralysis to try to understand paranormal experiences? With important tips on improving your sleep, Nodding Off is an essential read for anyone who sleeps, and more important still for those who don't get enough. Fans of Matthew Walker's Why We Sleep will love this book!."--

This volume is a compilation of the symptoms reported among the control groups from studies involving neuropsychologically impaired individuals and those with various medical and psychiatric conditions. The proposed project represents the logical progression from the previous volume, Practitioner's Guide to Symptom Base Rates in Clinical Neuropsychology. Whereas the previous book presented findings from the patient population, this book will cover the base rate of a particular symptom in the nonpatient/general population. This volume would provide clinicians with the necessary information to interpret any given patient's presenting symptoms relative to what is "normal" in the general population or "normal" for people similar to the patient. When used in conjunction with the previous volume, the clinician will also be able to interpret presenting symptoms relative to what is "typical" for patients with the same condition, allowing the clinician to consider the patient from a variety of standpoints. This volume would be of great usefulness to a wide variety of clinical practitioners in the fields of clinical neuropsychology, clinical psychology, forensics, neurology, neuropsychiatry, and psychiatry. The volume would also be useful in a variety of research settings. Examples of its applicability include providing valuable information to medical and psychological professionals working in the pharmaceutical industry in the development of new drugs, as well as professionals working in such areas as epidemiology and environmental health.

Buddhist Meditation written by Sarah Shaw and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-04-18 with Religion categories.

Meditative practice lies at the heart of the Buddhist tradition. This introductory anthology gives a representative sample of the various kinds of meditations described in the earliest body of Buddhist scripture, the Pali canon. It provides a broad introduction to their traditional context and practice and supplies explanation, context and doctrinal background to the subject of meditation. The main themes of the book are the diversity and flexibility of the way that the Buddha teaches meditation from the evidence of the canon. Covering fundamental features of Buddhist practice such as posture, lay meditation, and meditative technique it provides comments both from the principal early commentators on Buddhist practice, Upatissa and Buddhaghosa, and from reputable modern meditation teachers in a number of Theravadin traditions. This is the first book on Pali Buddhism which introduces the reader to the wide range of the canon. It demonstrates that the Buddha's meditative tradition still offers a path of practice as mysterious, awe-inspiring yet as freshly accessible as it was centuries ago, and will be of interest to students and scholars of Buddhism as well as Buddhist practitioners.

Stage Iv Addiction written by B.L. Marks and has been published by AuthorHouse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-03 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

The author is writing about her son's STAGE IV ADDICTION. How it affected not only the addict himself, but his entire family. This is a cautionary tale about a son who not only found his drug accidently but also got the gene of addiction. In the beginning of her book she writes about the misconceptions of both addiction and the addict. When her son first started with his disease, the author had that gut feeling that this disease was going to take him down, and unfortunately she was correct. She discusses how she feels that the difference between enabling, and unconditional love is a very fine line. The fact that this is not a life of self-indulgence. Addiction is a life of self-destruction. When her son first started with his addiction, back in the 90s if you didn't have insurance, then you didn't get treatment and it remains that way today, unless you are court mandated into a program That she feels treatment at that point in time, was somehow lacking. Mental health issues were a crucial factor in their treatment. It seems that only recently society has realized this. The author feels that the reality of the addict when he gets back into society is key to their recovery. They need to learn how to deal with their reality, and the systems must change in order for them to do so. Society seems to be scrambling because now the face of addiction can be any of us. It is at epidemic stage and it is all you read and hear about on the news. This is not a new disease, and this is not something that has just recently start to affect the ordinary person. This young man was not the typical face of addiction, you would not have picked him out of a crowd, as being the one to turn out to be a heroin addict, but he did. She feels that addiction is not only a serious mental health issue, but should also be staged like any other disease that has the capability of taking a person's life. For some of these addicts, rock bottom is death.
