Designed for trainers of community health workers, these guidelines are intended to help them instruct, in a practical way, those workers in how to improve nutrition in their areas. The book is divided into nine modules, each concerned with a different aspect of the community health worker's training. Each module first sets forth the learning objectives, then describes the content of the training, and finally gives a number of exercises to test the trainee's learning. The book is illustrated with numerous line drawings and charts. Topics covered in the modules are (1) getting to know the community and its needs; (2) measuring and monitoring the growth and nutrition of children; (3) breast-feeding; (4) diets for young children; (5) nutrition of the mother; (6) identification, management, and prevention of common nutritional deficiencies; (7) diarrhea and nutrition; (8) nutrition and infection; and (9) nutrition and the community: getting started. An annex, "Training Hints," explains how to plan training, selection and use of teaching aids, choice of teaching methods, and how to collect information on the community. (YLB)

Nutrition has been recognized as a major determinant of health for centuries. Tradi tionally, nutritional sciences have primarily targeted the prevention of diseases resulting from clinical deficiencies of essential nutrients, such as scurvy and rickets. Contempo rary nutritional research has focused on the prevention of major diseases of Western civilization, particularly cardiovascular disease and cancer, as well as promoting mater nal and child health and healthy aging. Heart disease and cancer, which were rare in most developing countries several decades ago, are increasing dramatically in these countries, in parallel with economic development and dietary transitions, decreases in infectious diseases, and increasing sedentary lifestyle and obesity. Substantial evidence indicates major chronic diseases such as coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers are largely preventable by relatively simple diet and lifestyle modifications. Despite the great potential of nutrition in preventing diseases and improving health, nutrition is not routinely emphasized in the education and training of physicians and other health care professionals. This has resulted in inadequate nutritional knowledge and lack of skills in providing dietary counseling among many health care professionals. Further more, in the past decade, the public's access to nutritional information has been increas ing rapidly, particularly through the Internet. There are now hundreds of websites providing a wide range of nutritional information and selling numerous dietary products. Because of the explosion in nutritional information, the public's demand for nutritional advice has been increasing rapidly and will continue to rise.

As the general public has become more aware of advances in nutrition, consumer demands for advice on matters of diet and disease have grown. This book offers recommendations to upgrade what were found to be largely inadequate nutrition programs in U.S. medical schools in order that health professionals be better qualified to advise and treat their patients. A comprehensive study of one-third of American 4-year undergraduate medical schools provided information on the current status of nutrition programs at each school. Conclusions were drawn and recommendations made from analysis of this gathered information. Questions examined in this volume include: Has medical education kept pace with advances in nutrition science? Are medical students equipped to convey sound nutritional advice to their patients? What strategies are needed to initiate and sustain adequate teaching of nutrition in medical schools?

Within the United Kingdom (UK), most mainstream healthcare practitioners receive little or no nutrition education during their years of training. As a consequence, the understanding of nutrition amongst primary care practitioners such as general practitioners, pharmacists, midwives, and practice nurses is limited and is largely focused on energy consumption and obesity. There is little knowledge of the wealth of micronutrients that underpin health, nor of the ticking timebomb of insufficient intakes of those micronutrients amongst a significant proportion of the population in the UK. The Building Blocks of Life: A Nutrition Foundation for Healthcare Professionals is a step towards redressing that balance. It sets out an informative and engaging narrative on how and why nutrition is the basis for good health. It discusses UK-specific issues with regards to diet and intakes of vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and other micronutrients. It also raises concerns about the potential negative health implications of the generally poor UK diet and suggests ways that healthcare practitioners can support patients in improving their long-term health outlook. Nutrition policy in the UK needs to be dragged into the 21st century and this book sets out evidence-based arguments which challenge current public health myths such as the idea that 10 micrograms of vitamin D is all anyone needs or the messaging around the consumption of saturated fat vs highly processed seed oils or that everyone can get all the nutrients they need from a varied and balanced diet. Although The Building Blocks of Life: A Nutrition Foundation for Healthcare Professionals focuses on concerns around poor diet and the consequent micronutrient inadequacies in the UK, the nutritional detail is relevant no matter where you are in the world. Everyone eats, all the time. It is time that mainstream medicine looked towards food as both a cause and a solution to many of the chronic degenerative conditions that plague modern life.
