Excerpt from The Battle of the Strong: A Romance of Two Kingdoms Always, always the white foam beats the rocks, and always must man go warily along these coasts. The swimmer plunges into a quiet pool, the snowy froth that masks the reefs seeming only the pretty fringe of sentient life to a sleeping sea but presently an invisible hand reaches up and grasps him, an un seen power drags him exultingly out to the main and he returns no more. Many a Jersey boatman, many a fisherman who has lived his whole life in sight of the Paternosters on the north, the Ecrehos on the east, the Dog's Nest on the south, or the Corbiere on the west, has in some helpless moment been caught by the unsleeping currents that harry his peaceful borders, or the rocks that have eluded the hunters of the sea, and has yielded up his life within sight of his own doorway, an involuntary sacrifice to the navigator's knowledge and to the calm perfection of an admiralty chart. Excerpt from Famous Land Fights This book is intended to be a companion volume to Mr. John Richard Hale's popular account of the evolution of naval warfare (Famous Sea Fights, from Salamis to Tsu-shima, Methuen & Co., Ltd.). It is an attempt to trace in the same way the development of land fighting from the days of early tribal warfare to the great conflicts of "Nations in Arms" in our own time. The evolution of weapons and tactics is described in bold outline, typical battles being dealt with in fuller detail in each of the great periods of history. I am quite aware that some of my conclusions as to various points are still matters of debate among experts. To give one instance, I am familiar with Professor Delbruck's theory, according to which the armies engaged in many famous battles of antiquity and of the early medieval period were mustered in much smaller force than that assigned to them by the usually accepted tradition of history. It will be seen that I adopt this view only to a very partial extent. But in a popular work of this kind one cannot discuss rival theories and state at length the arguments for and against them. Excerpt from Evolution and the Need of Atonement As the title indicates, the main object of this book is not to offer a new theory of the Atonement. Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief. The main objective of this book is to present the basic theoretical principles and practical applications for the classical interferometric techniques and the most advanced methods in the field of modern fringe pattern analysis applied to optical metrology. A major novelty of this work is the presentation of a unified theoretical framework based on the Fourier description of phase shifting interferometry using the Frequency Transfer Function (FTF) along with the theory of Stochastic Process for the straightforward analysis and synthesis of phase shifting algorithms with desired properties such as spectral response, detuning and signal-to-noise robustness, harmonic rejection, etc.

Excerpt from The Pioneer Fringe Six years ago, encouraged by David White, at that time the Home Secretary of the National Academy of Sciences and an officer Of the National Research Council, I presented a plan of research in pioneer settlement to the latter organization. After two years' consideration by a special committee, and by the Division of Geology and Geography, the National Research Council approved the plan and recommended it to the Social Science Research Council. The latter organization, after similar consideration for two years, gave its approval and provided generously for the support of the first project. This made it possible for the members of the Advisory Committee of the American Geographical Society to prepare a detailed plan of research in the Canadian field, a plan that has since been vigorously prosecuted by Canadian scholars through the Canadian Pioneer Problems Committee, with results that Will be published in the near future. At the same time the Council Of the American Geographical Society generously set up a separate fund for the support of related work on a more limited scale in several other regions. The Social Science Research Council and the American Geo graphical Society have also contributed to a joint fund for the publication of a series of papers entitled Pioneer Settlement by thirty authors who are specialists in the field and familiar with the regions With which they deal. The Pioneer Fringe is intended as an introduction to this companion volume and to the various publications that the plan will call into being and deals with the ideas that moved the three supporting organizations to give their approval. Excerpt from The Fringe of an Art: Appreciations in Music HE flight of time is the passing of modernity. T To take the words explicitly, I mean that the curious characteristic which we call modern, and which is the first exceptional quality of every masterpiece in every art, necessarily dies out of it with the flight of years. Explained thus, simply, and in plain words, there is a savour of truism in my phrase; and yet I do not merely and baldly mean that an artistic production, like man, like the flowers, like the sun, grows Older as the years go; I mean that those years do actually steal from it an absolute quality which it once possessed, and that the passage of time creates a supreme test of worth, not as the common opinion has it, because the average judgment of men declares this work or that work to be supreme, but because it survives in the average judgment of men after it has lost its overpowering quality of modernity. It is often a mystery that certain productions of the human brain are able to command an extensive and exciting popularity upon the moment of their publication, and that, after a brief lapse of years, they are permitted to fall, as Jeremy Taylor has it, into the lot of outworn faces. In nearly every such instance it will be found that the popularity that encompassed their few hours of triumph, wasdue to a certain modern quality which appealed either to the vulgar heart, or to the heart of the elect artist, but which, dying out with the minutes that move like the waves upon the pebbled shore, has left it pale, bloodless, shorn of vitality and of staying power.
