In recent years, there has been a rapid expansion in the field of nonlinear optics as weIl as in the field of neural computing. Up to date, no one would doubt that nonlinear optics is one of the most promising fields of realizing large neural network models due to their inherent parallelism, the use of the speed of light and their ability to process two-dimensional data arrays without carriers or transformation bottlenecks. This is the reason why so many of the interesting applications of nonlinear optics - associative memories, Hopfield networks and self-organized nets - are realized in an all optical way using nonlinear optical processing elements. Both areas attracting people from a wide variety of disciplines and judged by the proliferation of published papers, conferences, international collaborations and enterprises, more people than ever before are now in volved in research and applications in these two fields. These people all bring a different background to the area, and one of the aims of this book is to provide a common ground from which new development can grow. Another aim is to explain the basic concepts of neural computation as weIl as its nonlinear optical realizations to an interested audi ence. Therefore, the book is about the whole field of optical neural network applications, covering all the major approaches and their important results. Especially, it its an in troduction that develops the concepts and ideas from their simple basics through their formulation into powerful experimental neural net systems.

Artificial intelligence is deeply involved in our daily lives via reinforcing the digital transformation of modern economies and infrastructure. It relies on powerful computing clusters, which face bottlenecks of power consumption for both data transmission and intensive computing. Meanwhile, optics (especially optical communications, which underpin today’s telecommunications) is penetrating short-reach connections down to the chip level, thus meeting with AI technology and creating numerous opportunities. This book is about the marriage of optics and AI and how each part can benefit from the other. Optics facilitates on-chip neural networks based on fast optical computing and energy-efficient interconnects and communications. On the other hand, AI enables efficient tools to address the challenges of today’s optical communication networks, which behave in an increasingly complex manner. The book collects contributions from pioneering researchers from both academy and industry to discuss the challenges and solutions in each of the respective fields.

An Introduction To The Theory Of Spin Glasses And Neural Networks written by Viktor Dotsenko and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994 with Science categories.

This book aims to describe in simple terms the new area of statistical mechanics known as spin-glasses, encompassing systems in which quenched disorder is the dominant factor. The book begins with a non-mathematical explanation of the problem, and the modern understanding of the physics of the spin-glass state is formulated in general terms. Next, the 'magic' of the replica symmetry breaking scheme is demonstrated and the physics behind it discussed. Recent experiments on real spin-glass materials are briefly described to demonstrate how this somewhat abstract physics can be studied in the laboratory. The final chapters of the book are devoted to statistical models of neural networks. The material here is self-contained and should be accessible to students with a basic knowledge of theoretical physics and statistical mechanics. It has been used for a one-term graduate lecture course at the Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics.

Applications Of Neural Networks written by Alan Murray and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994-12-31 with Computers categories.

Applications of Neural Networks gives a detailed description of 13 practical applications of neural networks, selected because the tasks performed by the neural networks are real and significant. The contributions are from leading researchers in neural networks and, as a whole, provide a balanced coverage across a range of application areas and algorithms. The book is divided into three sections. Section A is an introduction to neural networks for nonspecialists. Section B looks at examples of applications using `Supervised Training'. Section C presents a number of examples of `Unsupervised Training'. For neural network enthusiasts and interested, open-minded sceptics. The book leads the latter through the fundamentals into a convincing and varied series of neural success stories -- described carefully and honestly without over-claiming. Applications of Neural Networks is essential reading for all researchers and designers who are tasked with using neural networks in real life applications.

Process Neural Networks written by Xingui He and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-07-05 with Computers categories.

"Process Neural Network: Theory and Applications" proposes the concept and model of a process neural network for the first time, showing how it expands the mapping relationship between the input and output of traditional neural networks and enhances the expression capability for practical problems, with broad applicability to solving problems relating to processes in practice. Some theoretical problems such as continuity, functional approximation capability, and computing capability, are closely examined. The application methods, network construction principles, and optimization algorithms of process neural networks in practical fields, such as nonlinear time-varying system modeling, process signal pattern recognition, dynamic system identification, and process forecast, are discussed in detail. The information processing flow and the mapping relationship between inputs and outputs of process neural networks are richly illustrated. Xingui He is a member of Chinese Academy of Engineering and also a professor at the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, Peking University, China, where Shaohua Xu also serves as a professor.

Neural Networks And Analog Computation written by Hava Siegelmann and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-12-01 with Computers categories.

The theoretical foundations of Neural Networks and Analog Computation conceptualize neural networks as a particular type of computer consisting of multiple assemblies of basic processors interconnected in an intricate structure. Examining these networks under various resource constraints reveals a continuum of computational devices, several of which coincide with well-known classical models. On a mathematical level, the treatment of neural computations enriches the theory of computation but also explicated the computational complexity associated with biological networks, adaptive engineering tools, and related models from the fields of control theory and nonlinear dynamics. The material in this book will be of interest to researchers in a variety of engineering and applied sciences disciplines. In addition, the work may provide the base of a graduate-level seminar in neural networks for computer science students.

Vlsi Design Of Neural Networks written by Ulrich Ramacher and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Technology & Engineering categories.

The early era of neural network hardware design (starting at 1985) was mainly technology driven. Designers used almost exclusively analog signal processing concepts for the recall mode. Learning was deemed not to cause a problem because the number of implementable synapses was still so low that the determination of weights and thresholds could be left to conventional computers. Instead, designers tried to directly map neural parallelity into hardware. The architectural concepts were accordingly simple and produced the so called interconnection problem which, in turn, made many engineers believe it could be solved by optical implementation in adequate fashion only. Furthermore, the inherent fault-tolerance and limited computation accuracy of neural networks were claimed to justify that little effort is to be spend on careful design, but most effort be put on technology issues. As a result, it was almost impossible to predict whether an electronic neural network would function in the way it was simulated to do. This limited the use of the first neuro-chips for further experimentation, not to mention that real-world applications called for much more synapses than could be implemented on a single chip at that time. Meanwhile matters have matured. It is recognized that isolated definition of the effort of analog multiplication, for instance, would be just as inappropriate on the part ofthe chip designer as determination of the weights by simulation, without allowing for the computing accuracy that can be achieved, on the part of the user.
