In this monumental book, sociologist Robert Castel reconstructs the history of what he calls "the social question," or the ways in which both labor and social welfare have been organized from the Middle Ages onward to contemporary industrial society. Throughout, the author identifies two constants bearing directly on the question of who is entitled to relief and who can be excluded: the degree of embeddedness in any given community and the ability to work. Along this dual axis the author locates virtually the entire history of social welfare in early-modern and contemporary Europe.This work is a systematic defense of the meaningfulness of the category of "the social," written in the tradition of Foucault, Durkheim, and Marx. Castel imaginatively builds on Durkheim's insight into the essentially social basis of work and welfare. This book explores the relationship between the education farmers have received and their subsequent efficiency as farm operators. The concern is with the self-employed in agriculture, the small farmer. The study is concerned solely with ascertaining empirically the effect of schooling on agricultural efficiency and, when possible, the effect of access to information as measured by exposure to extension services. The study uses data from Korea, Malaysia, and Thailand; related findings from several other countries of Africa, Asia, and Latin America are reviewed. Surveys of individual farms provide the data used in the empirical analyses. Analyses from Thailand indicate that farmers of all educational levels are maximizing profits. However, more educated farmers do have higher levels of profits, which reflect the higher levels of productivity found in the production function analyses. Education has little effect on market efficiency. Higher levels of education and exposure to extension services increase the probabilities of using chemical fertilizers. The effects of education were much more likely to be positive in modernizing agricultural environments rather than in traditional ones.

In the 17th century, Descartes put forth the metaphor of the machine to explain the functioning of living beings. In the 18th century, La Mettrie extended the metaphor to man. The clock was then used as the paradigm of the machine. In the 20th century, this metaphor still held but the clock was replaced by a computer. Nowadays, the organism is viewed as a robot obeying signals emanating from a computer program controlled by genetic information. This book shows that such a conception leads to contradictions not only in the theory of biology but also in its experimental research program, thereby impeding its development. The analysis of this problem is based on the most recent experimental data obtained in molecular biology as well as the history and philosophy of biology. It shows that the machine theory did not succeed in breaking with Aristotle's finalism. The book presents a new approach to biological systems based on cellular Darwinism. Genes are ruled by probabilistic mechanisms allowing cells to differentiate stochastically. Embryo development is not governed by a determinist genetic program but by natural selection occurring among cell populations inside the organism. This theory has considerable philosophical consequences. Man may be a machine but he is a random one.
