Today, the Tower of London is a tourist site, home only to the crown jewels, but not long ago the imposing structure held traitors, political prisoners, and more, often on their way to the chopping block. Even outside of this famous building, prisons have changed radically since the Norman Conquest in 1066. In the first book on the history of prisons in Britain, former prison governor and professor of criminology David Wilson offers unrivaled insight into the penal system in England, Scotland, and Wales, charting the rise and fall of forms of punishments that take place behind their walls. Pain and Retribution explores prisons as an institution and examines how they are designed, organized, and managed. Wilson reveals that prisons have to satisfy the demands of three interested parties: the public, from politicians and media commentators to everyday citizens; the prison staff; and the prisoners themselves. He shows how prevailing concerns and issues of the times allow one faction or another to have more power at varying points in history, and he considers how prisons are unable to satisfy all three at the same time—leading to the system being seen as a failure, despite rising numbers of prisoners and growing funds invested in keeping them incarcerated. With intriguing comparisons between the prisons of New York City and Britain and searching questions about the purposes of the current penal system, Pain and Retribution provides unparalleled access to prison landings, staffs, and the people behind the locked doors.

Beyond Retribution written by Christopher D. Marshall and has been published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Christianity and justice categories.

Recently a growing number of Christians have actively promoted the concept of "restorative justice" and attempted to develop programs for dealing with crime based on restorative principles. But is this approach truly consistent with the teaching of Scripture? To date, very little has been done to test this claim. Beyond Retribution fills a gap by plumbing the New Testament on the topics of crime, justice, and punishment. Christopher Marshall first explores the problems involved in applying ethical teachings from the New Testament to mainstream society. He then surveys the extent to which the New Testament addresses criminal justice issues, looking in particular at the concept of the justice of God in the teachings of Paul and Jesus. He also examines the topic of punishment, reviewing the debate in social thinking over the ethics and purpose of punishment -- including capital punishment -- and he advocates a new concept of "restorative punishment." The result of this engaging work is a biblically based challenge to imitate the way of Christ in dealing with both victims and offenders. - Publisher

A Sufi scholar’s philosophical interpretation of the names of God The Divine Names is a philosophically sophisticated commentary on the names of God. Penned by the seventh-/thirteenth-century North African scholar and Sufi poet ʿAfīf al-Dīn al-Tilimsānī, The Divine Names expounds upon the one hundred and forty-six names of God that appear in the Qurʾan, including The All-Merciful, The Powerful, The First, and The Last. In his treatment of each divine name, al-Tilimsānī synthesizes and compares the views of three influential earlier authors, al-Bayhaqī, al-Ghazālī, and Ibn Barrajān. Al-Tilimsānī famously described his two teachers Ibn al-ʿArabī and al-Qūnawī as a “philosophizing mystic” and a “mysticizing philosopher,” respectively. Picking up their mantle, al-Tilimsānī merges mysticism and philosophy, combining the tenets of Akbari Sufism with the technical language of Aristotelian, Neoplatonic, and Avicennan philosophy as he explains his logic in a rigorous and concise way. Unlike Ibn al-ʿArabī, his overarching concern is not to examine the names as correspondences between God and creation, but to demonstrate how the names overlap at every level of cosmic existence. The Divine Names shows how a broad range of competing theological and philosophical interpretations can all contain elements of the truth.

Adam Payback's a bitch - or it would be for Elle. Fifteen years ago, my sister was kidnapped. For months, she'd endured hell. Somehow, she'd survived it. Someway, she'd escaped her captors. But it hadn't mattered. In fact, it had been like losing her twice, because six weeks after she came home, she was dead, and the man responsible was alive and well, oblivious to her fate, ignorant to what he had coming. Fifteen years I'd been waiting for this moment, all that time, planning, preparing, readying to put things into motion. To finally make the SOB pay for what he'd done. Killing him was too easy. Too quick. No. There was a much better way to exact revenge. Take what he loved best. Break it. Break her. I just didn't realize that in the process of destroying the girl, I'd destroy myself. Elle "I only want your pain." I hadn't understood what those words meant, not really. Not until he made me understand. I noticed Adam the first day he moved into my building. He was a badass on a bike in a thousand-dollar suit. When he looked at me, it was with a hunger just this side of obscene. Our meetings were strange, accidental. Too coincidental. There was something about Adam. Something I couldn't put my finger on. Something I couldn't resist. He told me I didn't know him. He warned me to run as far from him as I could. He was moody. Dark. I'd found it romantic. I didn't know and wouldn't realize until it was too late that he'd meant for me to heed his warnings. That some part of him had hoped I would run, that I would escape him. For too many years, vengeance had fueled him. It had taught him hate. The object of that hate? My father. And me? I was the means to my father's end. Adam would destroy my father by destroying me. I accused him of being a monster, of being no different than those who took his sister, but even in the harshest moments, all I could see in his eyes was pain. And like a fool, all I wanted was to touch that darkness. To make it light.

TAKE A TRIP with a psychopath as he seeks revenge on friends and family who set him up and crossed him once they thought that he would be safely locked away in prison for a very long time. This book is based on an actual incident that took place in Atlantic City, New Jersey, back in June 2006. A very mentally unstable man, who was striving to maintain his sanity, was placed into a position where he felt forced to defend himself using deadly force. The woman closest to him sent people after him, to kill him, but they failed. Protecting himself got him over fifi ve long years in prison. Five years where a rage grew inside of him every second of each day. Throughout the incident and the length of the prison sentence, He is crossed by his family, friends, and the mothers of his children. All of them knew what type of animal they were dealing with, but they chose to cross him anyway. From the moment that He is released from prison, He begins seeking revenge on them all. His goal is not just to kill them. He wants to utterly destroy their lives and the lives of their loved ones. When someone this determined and demented is released back into society, with a grudge to settle, absolutely no one is safe; and He will prove it. Trunk Space is truly the most twisted tale ever told about what could happen when people mess with the wrong person. Take a journey into the mind of a lunatic and ride with him as He rights the wrongs that were done to him. Youll never expect what will happen next because even he is too sick and demented to know. Have you crossed the line lately with someone who is a little off? Hopefully not, or these events, or ones like it, could surely happen to you too. Feel His pain and His victims horror as He exacts his revenge.

I ruined everything. Myself, him...us. Now all I have left is deep-seated regret-an ache that never goes away. Every day and every night, I'm tortured by the pain of losing him. Grey. The man I had fallen hopelessly in love with. The worst part-because of me, he's no longer the Grey I loved. He's much worse. His rage turned him into someone dark, vicious, and cruel-and it's all my fault. No matter what I do, how hard I try, he won't let me atone for what I've done. There's no room in his heart for forgiveness, but I can't stop myself from trying. I have to. I can't give up. I won't give up...even if it means enduring his ultimate retribution.
