Economic theory offers several explanations as to why shifting expectations about future economic activity affect current demand. Abstracting from whether changes in expectations originate from swings in beliefs or fundamentals, we test empirically whether more optimistic or pessimistic potential output forecasts trigger short-term fluctuations in private consumption and investment. Relying on a dataset of actual data and forecasts for 89 countries over the 1990-2022 period, we find that private economic agents learn from different sources of in- formation about future potential output growth, and adjust their current demand accordingly over the two years following the shock in expectations. To provide a theoretical foundation to the empirical analysis, we also propose a simple Keynesian model that highlights the role of expectations about long-term output in determining short-term economic activity.

Excerpt from Optimism and Pessimism, or the Problem of Evil We come now to the philosophical efforts to solve the problem of evil. Here our inquiries must be limited to the most important. Plato, notwithstanding his idealism, or rather because of it, was by no means an Optimist, at least in relation to this life. In his judg ment, the condition of the human race on earth was essentially one of punishment and suffering for sins committed in a former state of being. He vindicates the pre-existence and transmigration of souls, though in a more dignified form than this doctrine was held by the Hindoos in India. The sensuous body appeared to him as the prison of the soul, from which it is to be freed by death. Matter is not any true existence, but the nothing, that which is impervious to true knowledge, the irrational. But, notwithstanding all this, Plato is not to be regarded as a Pessimist. He does not limit human existence to this earthly life, but supposes it to continue, and therefore to be capable of higher perfection or likeness to what is divine. These variations in human behaviour have profound mental and physical implications. The aim of the present work is to provide an overview of the psychology of pessimism. It is composed of four sections - I: How are optimism and pessimism measured?, II: What is the relationship between optimism and pessimism?, III: What is the relationship between optimism-pessimism and health?, and IV: What are the biology and chemistry of optimism-pessimism? For various reasons, rigorous analysis of pessimism has been difficult. Nonetheless, recent advances, including the development of numerous psychological batteries, have allowed for structured, scientific investigation. Indeed, several studies have examined the medical implications and biological and chemical bases of pessimism. Nonetheless, the psychology of pessimism is imperfect and further study is needed.
