Nuclear Medicine Therapy presents the state of the art in targeted radionuclide therapy, both in clinical practice and contemporary clinical investigation and trials. With contributions from an internationally-distinguished group of physicians and scientists, the book is devoted entirely to the use of nuclear medicine techniques and technology for therapy of malignant and benign diseases. Individual chapters cover the scientific principles and clinical applications of radionuclide therapy and the state of clinical trials of agents currently under investigation in the therapy of tumors involving virtually every organ system. Due to overlapping interest in techniques, indications, and clinical use, the development of radionuclide therapy attracts considerable input from other medical specialists whose collaboration is essential, including radiation and medical oncologists, hematologists, diagnostic radiologists, hepatologists, endocrinologists, and rheumatologists. And because radionuclide therapy is a rapidly evolving field of nuclear medicine, it is the aim of this volume to appeal to all specialists involved in targeted radionuclide therapy and to contribute to the standardization of the practice globally.

This text is a complete resource for all the imaging technologies, not just plain film radiography. It provides introductory material on pharmacological nomenclature, drug classifications, pharmacokinetics, and drugs used in imaging. It also offers comprehensive coverage of diagnostic contrast agents, along with drug administration procedures, emergency responses to drug reactions, and legal and ethical aspects of medication administration. Objectives and Key Terms open each chapter. Learning exercises include true/false, fill-in-the-blank, multiple-choice, and short-answer questions at the end of each chapter, with answers at the end of the book. Did You Know? boxes offer interesting tidbits of historical or current pharmacology information, connecting the book's drug content to everyday situations. Clinical Alert icons point out possible adverse reactions and toxic effects. Discussion of pharmacodynamics and drug classifications focuses on radiopaque contrast media used in imaging procedures, using clearly written text and useful tables. Pharmacokinetics coverage describes how drugs are absorbed, metabolized, distributed, and eliminated. Complete coverage of emergency procedures in response to adverse reactions to contrast media includes crash cart procedures and drugs used to treat cardiac and/or respiratory arrest and how to administer them appropriately. Updates on all contrast agents. New information on the use of contrast agents in ultrasound. New Drug Classifications chapter. New chapter on drug-related emergencies includes case studies. Evolve Resources for instructors include a 220-question test bank and an electronic image collection.

A new edition of a book is warranted when the book is successful and there are many new developments in the related discipline. Both have occurred for this book during the past 7 years since its second edition. The growth and development in nuclear pharmacy and radiopharmaceutical chemistry along with the continued success of the book have convinced us to update the book; hence this third edition. This book is a ramification of my nuclear pharmacy courses offered to pharmacy students specializing in nuclear pharmacy, nuclear medicine resi dents, and nuclear medicine technology students. The book is written in an integrated form from the basic concept of atomic structure to the practical clinical uses of radiopharmaceuticals. It serves both as a textbook on nu clear pharmacy for pharmacy students and nuclear medicine technologists, and as a useful reference book for many professionals related to nuclear medicine, such as nuclear medicine physicians and radiologists. The book contains 12 chapters. Each chapter is written as comprehen sively as possible based on my personal experience and understanding. At the end of each chapter, a section of pertinent questions and problems and so me suggested reading materials are included. I have made justifiably many additions and deletions as weIl as some reorganization in this edition. Chapter 3 is entirely dedicated to instru ments for radiation detection and measurement, including brief description of gas detectors, gamma-detecting instruments, and tomographic scanners.

This book provides a review of image analysis techniques as they are applied in the field of diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine. Driven in part by the remarkable sophistication of nuclear medicine instrumentation and - crease in computing power and its ready and inexpensive availability, this is a relatively new yet rapidly expanding field. Likewise, although the use of nuclear imaging for diagnosis and therapy has origins dating back almost to the pioneering work of Dr G. de Hevesy, quantitative imaging has only recently emerged as a promising approach for diagnosis and therapy of many diseases. An effort has, therefore, been made to place the reviews provided in this book in a broader context. The effort to do this is reflected by the inclusion of introductory chapters that address basic principles of nuclear medicine instrumentation and dual-modality imaging, followed by overview of issues that are closely related to quantitative nuclear imaging and its potential role in diagnostic and therapeutic applications. A brief overview of each chapter is provided below. Chapter 1 presents a general overview of nuclear medicine imaging physics and instrumentation including planar scintigraphy, single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and positron emission tomography (PET). Nowadays, patients’ diagnosis and therapy is rarely done without the use of imaging technology. As such, imaging considerations are incorporated in almost every chapter of the book. The development of dual-modality - aging systems is an emerging research field, which is addressed in chapter 2.
