Dans la tradition occidentale moderne, la figure de l'auteur correspond à un individu historique, avec ses déterminations psycho-sociales et son identité civique. A cette conception biographisante de l'auteur, Michel Foucault a proposé de substituer la notion de " fonction-auteur ". Coupé de son autonomie en tant que personne, privé de sa volonté créatrice individuelle, l'auteur devient ainsi une construction qui s'élabore en relation avec des formations discursives particulières. Il est incontestable qu'avant de se référer à un sujet historique avec son identité psycho-sociale, à une personne juridique responsable, voire à une fiction sociale couverte par un pseudonyme, les indices d'énonciation que nous percevons dans toute forme de discours renvoient d'abord à une figure construite dans le texte. S'élaborant dans le développement du discours même, cette figure est douée d'un éthos particulier, d'ordre fictionnel. Dans la tradition gréco-romaine, les noms d'auteur ne manquent pas : soit qu'ils apparaosse,t dans les formes de signature que sont les " sphragides ", soit qu'ils sont cités et mis en scène par des poètes, des philosophies ou des historiographes comme Homère ou Archiloque chez Pindare, Eschyle, Sophocle et Euripide dans les comédies d'Aristophane, ou Homère et Hésiode chez Hérodote. A côté des cultes qui dans l'Antiquité sont rendus à certains poètes en tant que héros, à côté de citations qui consacrent volontiers l'autorité poétique d'un littérateur, l'identité autoriale semble se cristalliser en particulier autour d'œuvres considérées en tant que corpus ou autour d'un genre particulier : Iliade ou Odyssée, mais aussi certains Hymnes homériques pour Homère, corpus de vers élégiaques pour Théognis, série d'inscriptions intégrées à l'Anthologie Palatine, Bucoloiques pour Virgile, sans parler de l'autorité philosophique diffractée dans la polyphonie des dialogues de Platon. Quelles sont donc les modalités énonciatives et les formes poétiques auxquelles renvoie la " fonction-auteur " dans l'Antiquité ? Les réponses apportées à ces deux questions sont ici précisées dans la confrontation comparative et contrastive avec d'autres traditions littéraires, au cours du moyen Age européen, à la Renaissance, au XVIIe siècle. Le dialogue entre antiquisants et modernistes débouche ainsi sur une tentative de comparaison différentielle.

This is a book about artistic modernism contending with the historical transfigurations of modernity. As a conscientious engagement with modernity's restructuring of the lifeworld, the modernist avant-garde raised the stakes of this engagement to programmatic explicitness. But even beyond the vanguard, the global phenomenon of jazz combined somatic assault with sensory tutelage. Jazz, like the new technologies of modernity, re-calibrated sensory ratios. The criterion of the new as self-making also extended to names: pseudonyms and heteronyms. The protocols of modernism solicited a pragmatic arousal of bodily sensation as artistic resource, validating an acrobatic sensibility ranging from slapstick and laughter to the pathos of bereavement. Expressivity trumped representation. The artwork was a diagram of perception, not a mimetic rendering. For artists, the historical pressures of altered perception provoked new models, and Ezra Pound's slogan 'Make It New' became the generic rallying cry of renovation. The paradigmatic stance of the avant-garde was established by Futurism, but the discovery of prehistoric art added another provocation to artists. Paleolithic caves validated the spirit of all-over composition, unframed and dynamic. Geometric abstraction, Constructivism and Purism, and Surrealism were all in quest of a new mythology. Making it new yielded a new pathos in the sensation of radical discrepancy between futurist striving and remotest antiquity. The Paleolithic cave and the USSR emitted comparable siren calls on behalf of the remote past and the desired future. As such, the present was suffused with the pathos of being neither, but subject to both.
