Un letrero que decía “Peluquería y Orquesta”, en un pueblito de México, sirve a la autora para abrir estas bien comprimidas prosas y hablar del amor. Otro par de páginas invita a pensar en lo original: “Debe ser verdad que lo poco que nos pasa hoy de esencial ya debe haberle pasado a otro antes. Pero, si lo sabemos, ¿por qué insistimos en una idea de originalidad que nos exigiría, de ser factible negar del todo nuestra condición de habitantes de una época de segunda mano”. En Fotografías de época, reflexiona sobre el tiempo “…nuestras fotografías de años pasados se vuelven a la vez extrañas y tremendamente expresivas cuando las volvemos a ver después de haber olvidado del todo no solo su existencia, sino también el alma que nos habitaba cuando se hicieron… ya sin obligaciones con ese tiempo ido aunque sometida a otros requerimientos descubro mi condición de resultado involuntario al que le faltaba tanto para llegar hasta aquí”. Son más sesenta capítulos, 160 páginas repletas de pensamiento en un formato poco común para la filosofía. Aunque para Carla Cordua no resultó difícil encontrar asuntos apropiados para la forma breve de una columna de diario, reconoce que lo dudoso fue siempre tratar los temas de un modo oportuno, encontrar el enfoque adecuado para el momento. “Un periódico es, mal que mal, cosa del día y aunque una columna suele contener reflexiones e ideas duraderas, capaces de conservar su validez por mucho tiempo, la mayoría de las veces será olvidada en seguida”, advierte. “Descifrar la ocasión para escribir y dar en el blanco es una actividad adivinatoria sin garantía de resultados felices. Espero haber insuflado a todas estas prosas una vida suficiente como para que su promoción a libro no le sugiera al lector que han recibido de este modo un ascenso que no se merecían”, dice la autora.

Juan Luis Martínez’s Philosophical Poetics is the first English-language monograph on this Chilean visual artist and poet (1942–1993). It has two principal aims: first, to introduce Martínez’s poetry and radical aesthetics to English-speaking audiences, and second, to carefully analyze key aspects of his literary production. The readings undertaken in this book explore Martínez’s intricate textual formalisms, the self-effacement that characterizes his poetry, and the tension between his local (Latin American, Chilean) aspect and the cosmopolitanism or transnationalism that insists on the global relevance of his work.
