Le « patrimoine culturel » renvoie à une culture commune, celle qui, héritée du passé, ouvre à l'avenir en même temps qu'aux autres cultures. Le plus facilement perceptible est ce que l'on appelle le patrimoine monumental (châteaux, églises ou autres bâtiments), pour lequel des actions sont engagées afin de les sauver ou les sauvegarder. Cette nécessité d'une protection ne vaut pas seulement pour l'architecture, mais également pour des expressions plus modestes, ainsi que pour des objets divers : ils nous rappellent et nous racontent notre histoire, ce qui permet de nous connaître et de nous reconnaître. Un autre patrimoine est le patrimoine immatériel (contes, recettes de cuisine, traditions populaires, etc.). Toutes ces expressions doivent être protégées parce qu'elles sont constitutives d'une identité, qui peut ouvrir sur l'altérité.
