Language has emerged as both a powerful bridge and a formidable barrier in the realm of public health communication. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted a significant challenge faced by minority and indigenous communities, particularly in regions of Sub-Saharan Africa. It's a challenge deeply rooted in the historical use of colonial languages—English, French, and Spanish—to disseminate critical health information. For many, this has translated into a linguistic exclusion, depriving them of access to essential resources and a voice in matters of national interest. This issue transcends mere communication; it touches upon the fundamental rights of individuals to participate in their own healthcare decisions and influences their sense of belonging and citizenship. Public Health Communication Challenges to Minority and Indigenous Communities proposes a solution with a transformative potential. This groundbreaking edited volume invites scholars from diverse fields to contribute their research, shedding light on the linguistic dimensions of public health communication during the COVID-19 era. By investigating the impact of language on various aspects of society, from medical information to education, this book seeks to synthesize the wealth of sociolinguistic research into an accessible framework. It's an invitation to explore the role of language in shaping our perceptions of citizenship, belonging, and empowerment.

Within Africa, radio provides an important platform for accommodating diverse linguistic groups and enabling speakers to express themselves in their own local languages. This book investigates how radio broadcasting across the continent provides a platform for cultural participation and the representation of minority language speakers in a contested public sphere. In African media, a fierce contest wages for representation and participation, in which majority languages often emerge at the exclusion of minority ethnolinguistic groups. This book considers the important role that radio can play in broadcasting in minority languages. Drawing on in-depth original analysis, ethnographic observation and interviews with minority language radio hosts and guests from across South Africa, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Malawi, Namibia, Mozambique, Lesotho and Kenya, this book considers to what extent African radio is accommodative of minority languages and what the challenges and prospects are for this. Ultimately, the book argues that radio’s three-tier system of broadcasting through analogue and digital radio leaves the medium of radio particularly well placed to provide equal access for ethnolinguistic groups in Africa. This ambitious and broad-ranging study will be an essential read for scholars and students of media studies and sociolinguistics in Africa.

This volume delves into the intricate relationship between technology and media production, emphasizing its influence across political, socio-economic, and cultural contexts. By 2010, the integration of computing and automated systems had already begun revolutionizing media production, prompting traditional outlets to embrace a 'digital first' approach. Concepts like dual-management processes and the fusion of traditional and digital systems have emerged, challenging conventional norms. What sets this transformation apart is the gradual replacement of human decision-making with communicative artificial intelligence and automation. Technology now plays a central role in producing and distributing news and Ads, fundamentally altering the media landscape. However, there has been limited exploration of the broader implications of these advancements, particularly from the perspective of the Global South. This edited volume seeks to address this gap by featuring papers that examine how technology has reshaped newsroom and advertorial processes in countries like Malawi, South Africa, and Nigeria. Through a collection of insightful essays, readers are invited to explore the transformative power of technology in media production, packaging, and distribution systems. From digital innovations to traditional media adaptations, this volume offers a comprehensive understanding of the evolving media landscape in the age of technology.

Platforming Cancel Culture: Digital Media, Identity and Cultural Intersections delves into one of the most polarizing phenomena of the digital age. Bringing together global, intersectional, and interdisciplinary perspectives, this edited collection unpacks the evolving dynamics of cancel culture, examining its practices and implications across diverse political and cultural landscapes. While some hail cancel culture as a tool for social justice, amplifying marginalized voices and calling out systemic inequalities, others critique it as performative virtue signalling or a form of censorship. This book navigates these tensions by analysing the complex interplay of digital platforms and governance mechanisms that shape cancel culture. It explores how platform architectures enable or resist cancel practices, how narratives and media discourses surrounding cancel culture are constructed and contested, and how these dynamics differ across national and cultural contexts. The contributors engage with cutting-edge research and offer localized insights from a range of contexts—including India, South Africa, China, Southeast Europe, the United States, and Russia—to challenge the universalizing assumptions often made about cancel culture. Methodologically diverse, the book employs sentiment and corpus analysis, digital ethnography, interviews, case studies, and critical cultural studies to provide a multifaceted examination of this volatile site of politics and cultural expression. By weaving together perspectives from the humanities, social sciences, and cultural studies, Platforming Cancel Culture presents a nuanced understanding of how cancel culture functions as a driver of accountability and a locus of contested power. This collection is an essential resource for scholars, students, and anyone seeking to critically engage with the intersections of digital media, culture, and identity in the 21st century.

The Inequality of COVID-19: Immediate Health Communication, Governance and Response in Four Indigenous Regions explores the use of information, communication technologies (ICTs) and longer-term guidelines, directives and general policy initiatives. The cases document implications of the failure of various governments to establish robust policies to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in a sample of advanced and low-income countries. Because the global institutions charged with managing the COVID-19 crisis did not work in harmony, the results have been devastating. The four Indigenous communities selected were the Navajo of the southwest United States, Siddi people in India, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of Australia and the Maasai in East Africa. Although these are all diverse communities, spread across different continents, their base economic oppression and survival from colonial violence is a common denominator in hypothesizing the public health management outcomes. However, the research reveals that national leadership and other incoherent pandemic mitigation policies account for a significant amount of the devastation caused in these communities. - Explores examples of pandemic mitigation practices in indigenous communities - Provides case studies of importance of ICTs in health care in 21st century pandemic management protocols - Presents real policy data collected from different continents from early days through the first year of the global pandemic
