Highlighting the current developments and future directions in GABA research, the ambitious aim of this topical volume is to cover GABA from the molecular mechanisms of its transmission to new targets for pharmaceutical research. Distinguished scientists at the forefront of GABA research were invited to contribute reviews on glutamate decarboxylase and autoimmunity, molecular structure and functional regulation of GABA transporters, transmitter release and GABA receptor regulation, GABA receptor subtypes and functional regulation, and GABA receptor ligands and their therapeutic application. Describing the latest advances in what has become a rapidly-evolving field, this volume will prove immensely valuable to neuroscientists, pharmacologists, biochemists, and physiologists working in the field of GABA research.

" ... this is an excellent compilation of data which should be on the bookshelves of all analysts interested in the benzodiazepines. It is to be hoped that, with the introduction of so many new ben zodiazepines, the author will quickly add these in a second edi tion" (A. C. Moffat in: Trends in Analytical Chemistry, 1983). This review, deputizing for many others, reflects the friendly reception enjoyed by the first volume of Benzodiazepines, which was published in 1982 and apparently closed a gap in the ben zodiazepine literature. In the meantime, Benzodiazepines has established itself as a standard book, as evidenced by numerous letters and quotations. Suggestions were also soon made for a new edition in view of the unusually rapid development in the field of the benzodiazepines. It became quickly obvious, however, that it would not be sufficient to publish a revised second edition, but that a completely new second volume would be required for which, however, the successful previous format could be largely retained. The following considerations seem worth mentioning in connection with the preparation of Volume II: - To ensure continuity with Volume I as far as possible, the list of references was consecutively numbered (references 1 to 3779 in Volume I, references 3780 to 11338 in Volume II). Whereas in Vol. I the substances appear in the sequential order of their historical development they are listed in alphabetical order in Vol. II.

This meeting was held commemorating Dr. Kito's 10th Anniversary as Professor of the Third Department of Internal Medicine, Hiroshima University School of Medicine. Dr. Kito was born in 1927 in Nagoya, graduated from Tokyo University School of Medicine and received his M. D. in 1951. He spent his first academic years as a research associate (1952 - 1968) at the Third Department of Internal Medi cine, Tokyo University School of Medicine. During this period he studied for one year (1952 - 1953) at Illinois University School of Medicine, and acquired his Ph. D. in 1959. In 1968 he became Instructor and in 1971 he was appointed as Assistant Professor of Tokyo Women's Medical College. In 1973, he became Professor of the Third Department of Internal Medicine, Hiroshima University School of Medicine. Dr. Kito is a clinician but he is always enthusiastic about basic medicine. His major research field concerns neurotrans mitters and their receptors in the central nervous system. He prefers a combination of neurotransmitter immunohistochemistry and receptor autoradiography as research techniques. He is also engaged in biochemical studies on amyloid proteins. When the Eighth Inter national Congress of Pharmacology was held in Tokyo in 1981, Dr. Segawa, Dr. Yamamura, and Dr. Kuriyama organized a Satellite Symposium on Neurotransmitter Receptors in Hiroshima. Dr. Kito attended this meeting and was deeply impressed by the active presentations and discussions. In order to make some contribution to the progress of neuro sciences, Dr.

The Third International Symposium on Neurotransmitter Receptors was held in Hiroshima at a time when the entire field of neurotransmitter receptors in the brain is progressing at an unprecedented pace. The sym posium also marked my retirement as Professor and Chairman of the Third Department of Internal Medicine, Hiroshima University School of Medicine, and a new beginning as a Professor of the University of the Air. The symposium was remarkably successful, and there were enthusiastic responses from scientists allover the world, proving that the meeting was timely. The selected papers contained in this volume constitute a state of-the-art survey of the most advanced aspects of neurotransmitter recep tor mechanisms in the brain. lowe thanks for the great success of the symposium to Prof. Richard Olsen of UCLA, Prof. Tomio Segawa of Hiroshima University, Prof. Kinya Kuriyama of Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, and Prof. Masaya Tohyama of Osaka University. I express my sincere gratitude to many friends for making this publication possible. I especially thank Dr. Rie Miyoshi, whose devoted efforts as secretary-general were vital to the success of the symposium. Dr. Miyoshi is currently an instructor in the Department of Pharmacology at Tokyo Women's Medical College. I would also like to acknowledge the excellent secretarial work of Misses Ritsuko Sato and Yuko Wakita.

Since the first Hiroshima Symposium of Neurotransmitter Receptors in 1983, there have been conspicuous advances in this field. For instance, our knowledge on transmembrane signalling mechanism has increased almost exponentially and this great stride has been linking areas of biology that had been previously considered of as being separate. The Second Hiroshima International Neurotransmitter Receptor Symposium was held on October 6 to 9 bringing together an outstanding group of neuroscientists from various disciplines to integrate these advances in the hope that their valuable contributions will make this meeting a tradition in this city. The original title of the Symposium was "Receptor Mechanism of Neurotransmitter and Neuropeptides". This volume is based on papers presented at this Second Hiroshima Symposium. Our aim editing this book is to discuss various neurotransmitter receptors in terms of their structural and biochemical properties, functions, ligands and related intracellular control mechanism, and to know the general denominators of all receptors. The editors believe that this book will provide a useful state-of-the-art summary of neuroreceptor fields at present and profit for those who could not participate in the Hiroshima Conference vicariously by reading the texts included in this volume. The editors acknowledge the help of many friends and colleagues in making this book possible. We are especially grateful to Dr. Shinobu Inagaki, former assistant professor of Third De-partment of Internal Medicine, Hiroshima University School of Medicine who made the Symposium successful as secretary-general through her devoted efforts. In 1988, Dr.
