Le « genre » véhicule peurs et fantasmes. Mal connu, le mot est aujourd’hui employé à tort et à travers et instrumentalisé politiquement ; ce qui réduit généralement les débats à un florilège d’idées reçues. Il serait ainsi une « mode américaine », une « lubie de féministes » ou encore une « théorie fumeuse », voire dangereuse, cherchant à nier les différences entre les femmes et les hommes et à s’immiscer dans les salles de classe et les têtes des enfants... Face à tant de confusion, il est fondamental d’apporter un éclairage sur ce que le genre est, et sur ce qu’il n’est pas. Car le genre est un concept bien précis et tout à fait sérieux. Il constitue un outil qui a été historiquement mobilisé – et continue de l’être – au coeur des mobilisations féministes relatives aux rapports de pouvoir entre les sexes, servant notamment à mettre à jour la nature sociale des processus qui attribuent à chacune des catégories sexuées des caractéristiques présentées comme naturelles. Les études sur le genre constituent aujourd’hui en France un champ de recherche florissant et dynamique, au sein duquel sont formulées et analysées des questions fondamentales portant sur des sujets aussi variés que le travail, la santé, le langage, la violence, la sexualité ou encore le sport, la famille, la religion, etc. Ces questions, comme les réponses qui peuvent leur être apportées, concernent tout le monde. C’est précisément pour cela qu’il est essentiel de rendre les réflexions sur le genre accessibles au plus grand nombre, au-delà du milieu universitaire où elles sont encore trop souvent confinées.

La violence fondée sur le genre va à l’encontre des valeurs essentielles des droits humains sur lesquelles est fondé le Conseil de l’Europe et auxquelles adhèrent ses États membres. Elle pose problème dans tous les États membres et touche des millions de femmes et d’hommes, de jeunes et d’enfants, quels que soient leur statut social, leur milieu culturel, leur religion, leur orientation sexuelle ou leur identité de genre. La prévention, le traitement et la lutte contre la violence fondée sur le genre font partie intégrante de l’éducation aux droits humains, du travail de jeunesse et des activités d’apprentissage non formel qui aident les jeunes à acquérir leur autonomie en tant que citoyens actifs, conscients des droits fondamentaux de chacun. Les questions abordées dans ce cadre concernent toutes directement les jeunes, leur vie et le monde dans lequel ils vivent. Questions de genre est un manuel qui explique comment aborder avec les jeunes le problème de la violence fondée sur le genre. Il donne un éclairage sur le genre et la violence fondée sur le genre, fournit des informations de fond sur les principaux aspects sociaux, politiques et juridiques, et propose notamment des activités éducatives et des méthodes permettant d’organiser des activités d’éducation et de formation avec les jeunes. Drawing examples from the 1870s, the 1930s, the 1960s, and today, Lisa Gitelman thinks across the media that the document form has come to inhabit over the last 150 years, including letterpress printing, typing and carbon paper, mimeograph, microfilm, offset printing, photocopying, and scanning. Whether examining late nineteenth century commercial, or "job" printing, or the Xerox machine and the role of reproduction in our understanding of the document, Gitelman reveals a keen eye for vernacular uses of technology. She tells nuanced, anecdote-filled stories of the waning of old technologies and the emergence of new. Along the way, she discusses documentary matters such as the relation between twentieth-century technological innovation and the management of paper, and the interdependence of computer programming and documentation.
