ABSTRACT: Performers are constantly striving to become better. Whether it{u2019}s perfecting their skills on an instrument, expanding their vocal range, or hitting the right marks on the stage, performing artists are always aiming to grow in their craft through performance and feedback. This study took place with a secondlevel theater class in a suburban high school in Pennsylvania as they went through the process of preparing, performing, and reflecting upon two-person scenes. The focus of this study was to elicit heightened student self-reflection and selfevaluation through the implementation of performance videos recordings. Using these recordings as their main methods of seeing themselves perform, students{u2019} eyes were opened up to a whole new world of reflection, discussion, and goal setting. Each scene required students to analyze, rehearse, and perform the scene with a partner. After each performance, students were asked to watch their video and reflect upon their performance using a series of questions. After watching and reflecting, students graded themselves using the same rubric that I used while they were performing. Upon their arrival back to class, I met with each student to compare rubrics where we discussed our reasoning for the grades, finally deciding on a grade for the student based on the average of the two rubrics. Other data for this study were collected through surveys, observational data, and conferences. iii The findings suggested two main points: Students took ownership over their work when they knew they had to grade and justify themselves and the methods of reflecting and evaluation significantly developed through the ability to see themselves on stage. Students found it easier to both reflect and set goals for future scenes through the aid of the videotaped performances. Evidents clearly indicated that the use of videotaped performances provided studnts with an important tool to successfully self-reflect upon and evaluate their performances which inevitably boostes their growth as performers.
