Tartanry and 'Balmoralty': is Scotland's thriving heritage industry an economic blessing or the curse of negative stereotyping? Since the eighteenth century, heritage has been synonymous with 'heritage tourism'. This book is the first to explore the images which this industry conveys and to analyse its centrality to Scotland's definition of itself. Based on an influential study by three leading sociologists, it examines the specific role and character of the major players in Scottish heritage - the National Trust for Scotland, the Scottish Tourist Board and Historic Scotland - as well as the lairds who have a stake in the industry. In describing its consumers, the authors show how heritage fits into their patterns of leisure, consumption and lifestyle. It also discusses the importance of 'heritage' (as opposed to 'history') to the country's identity and politics.

Looking at the success of Scotch whisky as a brand name, this book analyzes the ways that marketing and advertising served to establish dominance in the whisky market and how the drink achieved its exclusive role in the beverage industry. All whisky produced in Scotland is labeled "Scotch," and it relies on this name and its associations with quality and tradition, established through branding campaigns, to win new customers and maintain the loyalty of existing ones. The book provides key lessons for branding and examines how the same branding techniques that made Scotch whisky the bestselling spirit in world markets can be applied to other brands in different industries.

Originally published in 1978, but now re-issued with a new Preface by James Mitchell, this volume traces the rise of the SNP, with special emphasis on explaining the increase of the National Party vote in Scotland from the early 1960s to the late 1970s. The book draws much of its information from interviews with members and ex-members of the SNP, including some who helped to found the party in 1928. In describing the movement and giving an account of its main features, the author begins with a discussion of various aspects of Scottish society which have contributed to the growth of nationalism. These include the political developments of the Labour movement, the economic history of 20th Century Scotland the development of youth culture and in particular, the interest in folk music, as well as developments in the Church, the army, and the press.

Spanning more than 100 years of cultural history, this book examines the ways that representations of Scottish identity in Scotland and abroad have influenced and responded to the rapid changes of modernity since 1890. Popular representations of Scottish national, ethnic, and cultural identity are in abundance not only in Scotland, but also in the United States, Canada, and throughout the Anglophone settler nations of the world. The author argues that Scotland's history, traditions, and bloodlines have served as ideological battlegrounds for Scots and non-Scots alike to give voice to fantasies of pre-industrial communities and to the realities of working class life. Linking a range of nationalist renditions of Scottish culture, including poetry, film, folklore studies, clan organizations, and popular fiction, this volume shows the importance of Scotland to our present understanding of class, gender, race, and national identity. Public Relations, Branding and Authenticity: Brand Communications in the Digital Age explores the role of PR and branding in society by considering the notion of authentic communications within the context of an emerging digital media environment. This qualitative analysis explores the challenge of developing authentic brand narratives in the digital age, whilst questioning the problematic nature of authenticity itself. Case studies of public relations activity of successful brands, and those in crisis, are supplemented by interviews with senior public relations and branding practitioners. The book lays out three specific arguments. Firstly, a repositioning of the relationship between public relations and brand practice is explored. It is argued that public relations practitioners are well placed to facilitate brands in the digital age, because of the inherent acceptance of the value of relationship building, adaptation and boundary spanning embedded in PR practice and best practice theory. Secondly, the book introduces a new concept of riparian brands. Such brands are based on solid core values, but have an ability to atune, adjust and naturalise to the prevailing social, cultural and economic environment. Thirdly, the book presents an ontology of the riparian brand in the form of an authentic brand wheel and 15 real-time interaction success factors. Aimed at both academics and practitioners interested in the theoretical development of PR and its emerging relationship with branding, it will also be of interest to scholars of corporate communications, corporate reputation and branding.

This book explores the rise of a Scottish common law from the twelfth century on despite the absence until around 1500 of a secular legal profession. Key stimuli were the activity of church courts and canon lawyers in Scotland, coupled with the example provided by neighbouring England’s common law. The laity’s legal consciousness arose from exposure to law by way of constant participation in legal processes in court and daily transactions. This experience enabled some to become judges, pleaders in court and transactional lawyers and lay the foundations for an emergent professional group by the end of the medieval period.
