In 1964, a mechanism explaining the origin of particle masses was proposed by Robert Brout, François Englert, and Peter W. Higgs. 48 years later, in 2012, the so-called Higgs boson was discovered in proton-proton collisions recorded by experiments at the LHC. Since then, its ability to interact with quarks remained experimentally unconfirmed. This book presents a search for Higgs bosons produced in association with top quarks tt̄H in data recorded with the CMS detector in 2016. It focuses on Higgs boson decays into bottom quarks H → bb̅ and top quark pair decays involving at least one lepton. In this analysis, a multiclass classification approach using deep learning techniques was applied for the first time. In light of the dominant background contribution from tt̄ production, the developed method proved to achieve superior sensitivity with respect to existing techniques. In combination with searches in different decay channels, the presented work contributed to the first observations of tt̄H production and H → bb̅ decays.

This book reports the successful optimization of the Compact Mupn Solenoid (CMS) tau trigger algorithm for the Run-3 (Phase-1) of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and a completely new and original design of a machine learning based tau triggering algorithm for the High Luminosity LHC (or Phase-2). A large proportion of searches at collider experiments relies on datasets collected with a dedicated tau lepton selection algorithm, particularly difficult to operate in intense hadronic environments, making the work descirbed in this book of prime importance. The second part of the book describes a major and very challenging data analysis, aiming to detect Higgs boson pair production. The book summarizes these contributions in clear, pedagogical prose while keeping an adequate and coherent balance between the technical and data analysis aspects. Machine learning techniques were used extensively throughout this research; therefore, special care has been taken to describe their core principles and application in high-energy physics, as well as potential future developments for sophisticated low-latency trigger algorithms and modern signal extraction methods.

This thesis presents innovative contributions to the CMS experiment in the new trigger system for the restart of the LHC collisions in Run II, as well as original analysis methods and important results that led to official publications of the Collaboration. The author's novel reconstruction algorithms, deployed on the Field-Programmable Gate Arrays of the new CMS trigger architecture, have brought a gain of over a factor 2 in efficiency for the identification of tau leptons, with a very significant impact on important H boson measurements, such as its decays to tau lepton pairs and the search for H boson pair production. He also describes a novel analysis of HH → bb tautau, a high priority physics topic in a difficult channel. The original strategy, optimisation of event categories, and the control of the background have made the result one of the most sensitive concerning the self-coupling of the Higgs boson among all possible channels at the LHC.

This thesis reports a search for double Higgs boson production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This process is predicted by the Standard Model of particle physics (SM), with a production cross section around 1000 times smaller than single Higgs boson production. Its study can provide information about the Higgs potential, the Higgs self-coupling, and its couplings to other SM particles such as the t quark or the vector bosons. Additionally, Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) effects can manifest as modiffications on the production cross section or changes in event kinematics. Two production modes are studied, gluon fusion (ggF) and vector boson fusion (VBF). This search is performed using data from the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment during the so-called Run 2 of the LHC, corresponding to proton-proton collision data collected in 2016, 2017, and 2018, and amounting to a total integrated luminosity of around 138 fb1. The analysis considers the final state where a Higgs boson decays into two b quarks and the other decays into two leptons. The discovery in 2012 of the last elementary particle predicted by the Standard Model, the Higgs boson, has opened a new era in particle physics. One of the objectives now is to probe the coupling of the Higgs boson to other particles in order to confirm the validity of the model. The work of this thesis focused initially on the identification of jets coming from b quark at trigger level. The goal is to allow for the selection of one thousand events among the forty million produced every second at the LHC, by identifiying objects present in the final states of interesting physics processes such as the associated production of a Higgs boson decaying in a pair of b quark with a Z boson decaying into undetected neutrinos. The work then moved to the study of the coupling of the Higgs boson to the quark top, most massive particle in the Standard Model. After a study of one of the important background of the associated production of the Higgs boson and a top quark pair, a new method called matrix element method has been used to improve the discrimination between signal and background. This analysis has led to the first experimental evidence of coupling between the Higgs boson and the top quark.

This book describes the first application at CMS of deep learning algorithms trained directly on low-level, “raw” detector data, or so-called end-to-end physics reconstruction. Growing interest in searches for exotic new physics in the CMS collaboration at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN has highlighted the need for a new generation of particle reconstruction algorithms. For many exotic physics searches, sensitivity is constrained not by the ability to extract information from particle-level data but by inefficiencies in the reconstruction of the particle-level quantities themselves. The technique achieves a breakthrough in the reconstruction of highly merged photon pairs that are completely unresolved in the CMS detector. This newfound ability is used to perform the first direct search for exotic Higgs boson decays to a pair of hypothetical light scalar particles H→aa, each subsequently decaying to a pair of highly merged photons a→yy, an analysis once thought impossible to perform. The book concludes with an outlook on potential new exotic searches made accessible by this new reconstruction paradigm.

In this book, the interaction between the Higgs boson and the top quark is studied with the CMS detector at the LHC via the search for the associate production of the Higgs boson with one (tH) or two (ttH) top quarks. These processes are very rare and thus a high particle selection efficiency by the trigger system is essential. The selection of hadronically decaying tau leptons, expected from the Higgs boson decays, is tackled in the first part, where the trigger is optimized for Run 2 and Run 3 and a novel machine-learning based trigger for the High-Luminosity LHC is developed. The second part presents the analysis of tH and ttH where the Higgs boson decays into tau leptons, W or Z bosons with Run 2 data. The presence of multiple particles in the final state leads to the use of multivariant discriminants based on machine learning and the Matrix Element Method. The sophisticated methods used and the unprecedented amount of data result in the most precise cross section measurements to date.
