Introduction: Sensorimotor training (SMT) is used in rehabilitation to improve muscle reflexes. In daily practice, two types of devices were used. Firstly, active therapy devices, such as whole-body vibration devices (WBV), and secondly passive therapy devices, such as foam mats, balance boards, etc. were used. Purpose: The question that arises is if these devices could produce the necessary stimuli for the sensorimotor system in order to obtain the desired motor response. Method: A narrative literature review was carried out. Results: Investigations described that passive therapy devices produce primary weak stimuli below 3 Hz. Active treatment devices could produce stimuli between 1 Hz to 60 Hz. Conclusion: The movement control and movement coordination are subject to the functional capability of the sensorimotor system. This includes the recording, its forwarding and the signal transmission. In daily life, a muscle response must occur within a certain time frame, with the aim to stabilizing a joint or to keep the body in balance. For example, the quadriceps muscle must contract during walking within 125 to 200 ms or during stairs climbing within 100 to 150 ms. Implemented to treatment modalities, a frequency range between 3 and 6 Hz should be used.

Background and AimsDesign affects the way we experience the world every day: from the handle of a door to the interface of a smartphone, we experience a designed world in all our actions. The application of design thinking to rehabilitation aims to investigate the possibilities of development of an user-friendly environment, in which the users are both the patient and the therapists, to create a system that enhances the rehabilitative experience through the use of gamification strategies, driving the patient into a state of flow and engagement that results into an optimization of the rehabilitative experience.MethodThe research has been conducted as part of a doctorate in Design Sciences, optimized with the interdisciplinary investigation through robotics and neurosciences, with the support of tools from the Design Research Methodology (DRM) for the literature studies and from ethnographic approaches (e.g. on-field observation in a Stroke Unit and interviews).Quick-sketching and rapid prototyping have been instruments for the design and the investigation of the concept development.ResultsThe result is the design of a concept for a system to be used for sensorimotor rehabilitation of the lower limbs in bedridden patients, integrating teachings on rehabilitative procedures, haptic stimulation and physical interaction with virtual gaming dynamics to improve the patientu2019s involvement with the rehabilitation.ConclusionAs external figures with technical and humanistic background, designers can become a connector between the physician, the patient and the engineers in order to develop systems that integrates advanced technologies into the rehabilitative therapy to make it a more effective and pleasant experience.

While virtual reality (VR) has influenced fields as varied as gaming, archaeology and the visual arts, some of its most promising applications come from the health sector. Particularly encouraging are the many uses of VR in supporting the recovery of motor skills following accident or illness. Virtual Reality for Physical and Motor Rehabilitation reviews two decades of progress and anticipates advances to come. It offers current research on the capacity of VR to evaluate, address, and reduce motor skill limitations and the use of VR to support motor and sensorimotor function, from the most basic to the most sophisticated skill levels. Expert scientists and clinicians explain how the brain organizes motor behavior, relate therapeutic objectives to client goals and differentiate among VR platforms in engaging the production of movement and balance. On the practical side, contributors demonstrate that VR complements existing therapies across various conditions such as neurodegenerative diseases, traumatic brain injury and stroke. Included among the topics: Neuroplasticity and virtual reality. Vision and perception in virtual reality. Sensorimotor recalibration in virtual environments. Rehabilitative applications using VR for residual impairments following stroke. VR reveals mechanisms of balance and locomotor impairments. Applications of VR technologies for childhood disabilities. A resource of great immediate and future utility, Virtual Reality for Physical and Motor Rehabilitation distills a dynamic field to aid the work of neuropsychologists, rehabilitation specialists (including physical, speech, vocational and occupational therapists), and neurologists.

Rehabilitation Robotics written by Roberto Colombo and has been published by Academic Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-03-08 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Rehabilitation Robotics gives an introduction and overview of all areas of rehabilitation robotics, perfect for anyone new to the field. It also summarizes available robot technologies and their application to different pathologies for skilled researchers and clinicians. The editors have been involved in the development and application of robotic devices for neurorehabilitation for more than 15 years. This experience using several commercial devices for robotic rehabilitation has enabled them to develop the know-how and expertise necessary to guide those seeking comprehensive understanding of this topic. Each chapter is written by an expert in the respective field, pulling in perspectives from both engineers and clinicians to present a multi-disciplinary view. The book targets the implementation of efficient robot strategies to facilitate the re-acquisition of motor skills. This technology incorporates the outcomes of behavioral studies on motor learning and its neural correlates into the design, implementation and validation of robot agents that behave as ‘optimal’ trainers, efficiently exploiting the structure and plasticity of the human sensorimotor systems. In this context, human-robot interaction plays a paramount role, at both the physical and cognitive level, toward achieving a symbiotic interaction where the human body and the robot can benefit from each other’s dynamics. Provides a comprehensive review of recent developments in the area of rehabilitation robotics Includes information on both therapeutic and assistive robots Focuses on the state-of-the-art and representative advancements in the design, control, analysis, implementation and validation of rehabilitation robotic systems
