This edited volume highlights how institutions, programs, and less commonly taught language (LCTL) instructors can collaborate and think across institutional boundaries, bringing together voices representing different approaches to LCTL sharing to highlight affordances and challenges across institutions in this collection of essays. Sharing Less Commonly Taught Languages in Higher Education showcases how innovation and reform can make LCTL programs and courses more attractive to students whose interests and needs might be overlooked in traditional language programs. The volume focuses on how institutions, programs, and LCTL instructors can work together, collaborating and thinking across institutional boundaries to explore innovative solutions for offering a wider range of languages and levels. With challenges including instructor isolation, difficulty in offering advanced courses or sustaining course sequences, and minimal availability of pedagogical materials compared to commonly taught languages to overcome, this collection is a vital resource for language educators and language program administrators. Narratives Of Non English L2 Language Teachers written by Nur Yiğitoğlu Aptoula and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-07-25 with Education categories.

This book highlights the narratives of teachers of non-English languages. Much of what we know about L2 teaching is based on conclusions drawn from research on teaching in English as an L2, with languages besides English being given short shrift or ignored entirely. Examining L2 teaching practices related to non-English languages can help us gain a more comprehensive understanding of language pedagogy. This is because different target languages play different roles in the contexts in which they are taught, which influences teaching and learning in significant ways. The contributions in this book include chapters from L2 instructors who teach a wide range of languages in different settings, including different geographical, sociolinguistic, and institutional contexts. With narratives focused on pedagogical practices and practical materials, this resource will be beneficial to pre-service teachers, teacher educators, and researchers in language education, as well as in-service teacher training programs.

The perception of a permanent enrollment crisis in US postsecondary foreign language education has shaped our profession’s image for an entire generation of educators. Over the past 30 years, this crisis rarely invited self-examination or inspired creativity. Instead, it was routinely attributed to external factors: shrinking budgets, unsympathetic administrators, disengaged students. This volume is refreshingly optimistic: After providing a nuanced picture of the complex enrollment situation and focusing on perceptions of language education among undergraduate students, the volume features an inspiring panorama of successful models that revitalized language programs at a wide range of institutions. The diversity of approaches to post-secondary language education in the United States featured in this volume highlights that there are no simple “one size fits all” solutions. To be transformational, initiatives need to be intimately calibrated to the evolving needs and desires of our institutions’ most important stakeholder: the student. In the midst of falling enrollments and endowments, university leaders consider partnering, merging, and even closing institutions. Since the economic recession of 2008, colleges and universities have looked for ways to lower costs while increasing incomes. Not all have succeeded. Threatened closures and recent institutional mergers point to what might be a coming trend in higher education. The long-term economic weakness of colleges and universities means schools need to become more strategic about how they consider previously unthinkable options. This provocative book will be their indispensable guide to managing the crisis. In Consolidating Colleges and Merging Universities, James Martin and James E. Samels bring together higher education leaders to talk about something that few want to discuss: how institutions might cooperate with their competitors to survive in this economic climate. Barring that, Martin and Samels argue, some will shutter their campuses. But closing, they emphasize, is a complex process that involves more than just sending the students home and turning off the lights. The first one-volume resource for presidents, trustees, provosts, chief financial officers, and faculty leaders planning to partner, merge, or close a college or university, the book offers specific guidelines and action steps used successfully to create multiple forms of partnership between higher education institutions. The book includes contributions by twenty nationally recognized leaders in partnership and strategic planning, as well as an appendix detailing key college and university mergers and closures since 2000. Each chapter includes informative responses from practitioners who answer the question, “What is the single most important lesson you would share with a planning team designing a partnership or merger this year?” Responding to many daunting questions now being raised nationally about institutional fragility and sustainability, Consolidating Colleges and Merging Universities is an honest and practical guide to the possibilities and pitfalls of downsizing American higher education.

Second language program development and administration is a long-standing area within the larger field of applied linguistics. In many ways, it is the quintessential applied linguistics field, as it crosses disciplinary boundaries while balancing the rigors of scholarly inquiry with the demands of practical application without losing sight of concrete learner outcomes. The Routledge Handbook of Language Program Development and Administration provides a scholarly rigorous, yet practically relevant treatment of issues implicated in program development and administration with 52 chapters written by leading scholars in the field. Authors not only address the theoretical underpinnings of their respective topics but also provide actionable, evidence-based recommendations concerning eminently practical matters. In this way, the volume provides both novice and experienced language program administrators with important guidance on how to think about the work that they do and how best to go about it, while also validating language program administration as a scholarly area of inquiry. The Routledge Handbook of Language Program Development and Administration is essential reading for practicing second language program administrators at the post-secondary level, in-service and pre-service second language instructors, graduate students in applied linguistics, and even upper-level undergraduate education students considering second language teaching as a future career.

The Seal Of Biliteracy In Higher Education written by Kristin J. Davin and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-12-27 with Education categories.

This book brings together the work of those implementing, using, or researching the Seal of Biliteracy (SoBL) in higher education contexts. Book chapters detail how various institutions of higher education (IHEs) are leveraging their state’s SoBL policy and/or the Global SoBL to promote biliteracy within and across communities. In all 50 United States, high school graduates can earn a state SoBL, which is noted on the high school transcript to certify the ability to read, write, speak, and listen in more than one language. An increasing number of IHEs recognize the SoBL, and evidence suggests that such policies can serve as a recruitment tool, boost enrollment in modern language departments, and facilitate placement into modern language coursework. This book provides examples of how IHEs can implement the state SoBL, the Global SoBL, or their own recognition to recognize students’ multilingualism, boost enrollment, enhance practice, and nurture biliteracy in their communities. The research-based examples in each chapter provide robust examples of how IHEs can leverage the SoBL to increase equity and access to higher education for multilingual students. This book targets educators, leaders, policymakers, and researchers interested in collaborating to enhance multilingualism in their communities. Whether working in K-12 schools or IHEs, readers can learn about potential avenues to expand pipelines, partnerships, and possibilities for learners to earn and benefit from a SoBL.
