This volume accentuates how ELT materials can be a mediation of capitalizing on moral and cultural values, which are more locally-grounded in respective Southeast Asia (SEA) countries. It features critical studies on locally-produced ELT materials (textbooks) situated in the following SEA countries: Timor-Leste, The Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand. The chapters, written by experts who know the ELT context of their respective SEA country, critically examine the design and use of ELT materials widely used in local and national contexts. Thus, the volume provides fresh insight into how values are uniquely manifested in language classroom materials. The present text also brings together empirical, conceptual and practical grounds for incorporating moral and cultural values into ELT materials development in such a way that it views morality and culture as a mutually complementing entity. This much-needed volume will be a valuable resource for those interested in the design and use of language materials in culturally and linguistically diverse contexts, such as in the Asia Pacific, America, Africa, and Europe.

The notion of World Englishes which is now being increasingly recognized by most linguists and scholars has stimulated the search for a new linguistic model that can accommodate and facilitate the use of English as a lingua franca. On the other hand, the paradigm of World Englishes also necessitates recognition of various Englishes from different parts of the world. ln Indonesia, more teachers are starting to understand that todays English language instruction is no longer aimed at merely imitating foreign varieties, such as American English, British English. and Australian English. However, they are faced with a dilemma because it means that they might need to give up the long-established prescription for American, British. or Australian English as the only desired language model. The lack of clarity regarding which variety should be used as a model for English language teaching in Indonesia is what underlies the writing of this book. lt is an attempt to identify and describe the linguistic features of Indonesian English in the hope of foreseeing any functional version of the variety which might become a factor in the plurality of World Englishes. With all its limitations, this book seeks to provide a brief depiction of the linguistics of Indonesian English and discussion about the extent to which this variety may be integrated into the practices of English language teaching in Indonesia. "Unlocking the door to a new era in language instruction, this book is a groundbreaking exploration of the evolving linguistic landscape in Indonesia. As English transforms into a global lingua franca, this book navigates the complexities faced by educators, offering a thoughtful and practical guide to incorporating the distinctive features of Indonesian English. A must-read for anyone shaping the future of English language teaching, this work is a beacon of clarity in a world of linguistic diversity." Assist. This book analyzes the basic ideas and premises underlying the English textbooks used at the higher secondary school level in Vietnam from the 1980s to the present, from a sociological perspective. The dataset, upon which this book builds, consists of a collection of 18 textbooks, which belong to five sets of locally developed English textbooks for grade 10 to grade 12 students. These series were used in all public schools from the mid-1980s to the present. During this period, schooling expanded rapidly in Vietnam, while English also gained increasing prominence within the school system. This book examines the curricular content of these textbooks and presents a long-term analysis of the ‘hidden’ curricular content in light of Vietnam’s recent history and its government’s concerns about national identity.

Bringing together a range of perspectives from tertiary language and culture teachers and researchers, this volume highlights the need for greater critical engagement with the question of language teacher identity, agency and responsibility in light of an ever changing global socio-political and cultural landscape. The book examines the ways in which various moral, ethical, and ideological dimensions increasingly inform language teaching practice for tertiary modern/foreign language teachers, both collectively as a profession but also at the individual level in everyday classroom situations. Employing a narrative inquiry research approach which combines brief autobiographical reflections with semi-structured interview data, the volume provides a comprehensive portrait of the processes ten teacher-researchers in Australia working across five different languages engage in as they seek to position themselves more purposefully within a critical, political and ethical framework of teaching practice. The book will serve as a springboard from which to promote greater understanding and discussion of the impact of globalisation and social justice corollaries within the field, as well as to mediate the gap between language teaching theory and practice, making this key reading for graduate students and researchers in intercultural communication, language teaching, and language teacher education.
