Sorghum Biochemistry: An Industrial Perspective explores the many uses for sorghum in industry and biofuels. Not only does it offer a detailed understanding of the physical and biochemical qualities of the grain, it also takes an in-depth look at the role sorghum plays in such industries as brewing and ethanol production and the mechanics of post-harvest processing and value addition. Sorghum has long been an important staple in Africa and Asia, but its value goes far beyond its uses in human and animal consumption. Sorghum is also used in many industries, including waxes, packing material, wall board, ethanol, beverages, and brewing, and one variety called sweet sorghum has also been used as a bioenergy crop. Sorghum Biochemistry: An Industrial Perspective offers a closer look at how the grain is used in such a variety of ways, and how we can continue to optimize its potential. Provides detailed biochemical studies on grain sorghum to inform researchers grappling with similar issues Offers foundational information on the quality and composition of sorghum as a grain Covers a variety of uses for sorghum in many industries, including food and beverage, energy, and brewing Includes photos and illustrations to enhance the understanding of processes and sorghum biochemistry

Sorghum is one of the five important cereal crops of the world and cultivated by millions in the semi-arid tropics for food and animal fodder. In addition to high yielding cultivars, crop and soil management plays a major role in sorghum cultivation. The present book "Handbook of Sorghum" contains 19 chapters covering origin and history, morphology and classification, soil management, varietal improvement, nutrient and water management, integrated management of weeds, insect-pests and diseases, sorghum-based intercropping systems, sorghum food and industrial utilization, biotechnology of sorghum, forage sorghum, sorghum as bio-energy crop and sorghum cultivation under zero tillage in rice-fallows. The hand book covers the fundamentals of the subject as well as at the same time inspire and prepare sorghum scientists and extension workers for the emerging frontiers. We believe this book will generate new ideas and serve as a guide to students, extension workers and also researchers for working in problem areas to find their easy solutions.

Corn and grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor subsp. bicolor L) are among the top cereal crops world wide, and both are key for global food security. Similarities between the two crops, particularly their adaptation for warm-season grain production, pose an opportunity for comparisons to inform appropriate cropping decisions. This book provides a comprehensive review of the similarities and differences between corn and grain sorghum. It compares corn and sorghum crops in areas such as morphology, physiology, phenology, yield, resource use and efficiency, and impact of both crops in different cropping systems. Producers, researchers and extension agents in search of reliable scientific information will find this in-depth comparison of crops with potential fit in dryland and irrigations cropping systems particularly valuable. Presents a wide range of points of comparison Offers important insights for crop decision making

This book is mainly based on the latest research results and applications of sorghum food in human diet and gets good health benefits from it. Sorghum has several medical properties and cures several diseases as mentioned in the index. Sorghum grains can be converted in various indigenous food products and include in the daily human diet. Some of the specific sorghum components when added to foods, antioxidants control rancidity development, retard the formation of toxic oxidation products, maintain nutritional quality and extend the shelf-life of products. Sorghum diet is useful for curing cancer, diabetic disorder and so many other aliments also. In addition, sources of other beneficial components of sorghum are also discussed in detail. Sorghum is the only one cereal sustain under drought situation and gives definite yield under rain-fed condition. During current climate change situation sorghum is the best drought resistant crop for getting definite amount of grain yield.

The global population is projected to reach almost 10 billion by 2050, and food and feed production will need to increase by 70%. Wheat, maize and sorghum are three key cereals which provide nutrition for the majority of the world's population. Their production is affected by various abiotic stresses which cause significant yield losses. The effects of climate change also increase the frequency and severity of such abiotic stresses. Molecular breeding technologies offer real hope for improving crop yields. Although significant progress has been made over the last few years, there is still a need to bridge the large gap between yields in the most favorable and most stressful conditions.

Genomics Of The Saccharinae written by Andrew Paterson and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-09-13 with Science categories.

The Saccharinae clade of the Poaceae (grass) family of flowering plants includes several important crops with a rich history of contributions to humanity and the promise of still-greater contributions, as a result of some of the highest biomass productivity levels known, resilience to drought and other environmental challenges that are likely to increase, amenability to production systems that may mitigate or even reverse losses of ecological capital such as topsoil erosion, and the recent blossoming of sorghum as a botanical and genomic model for the clade. In Genomics of the Saccharinae, advances of the past decade and earlier are summarized and synthesized to elucidate the current state of knowledge of the structure, function, and evolution of the Sorghum, Saccharum, and Miscanthus genera, and progress in the application of this knowledge to crop improvement. As a backdrop, it is important to understand the naturally occurring diversity in each genus, its organization and distribution, and its evolutionary history. Genomic tools and methods for Saccharinae biology and improvement have improved dramatically in the past few years – a detailed summary of these tools and their applications is a central element of this book. Application of genomic tools to priorities in crop improvement, including understanding and manipulating plant growth and development, composition, and defense, as well as increasing the quality and productivity of seed/grain, sugar, biomass, and other value-added products under a range of conditions and inputs, are addressed. In particular, as the first native African crop to emerge as a genomic model, sorghum offers an excellent case study of challenges and opportunities in linking new advances in biosciences to solving some of Africa’s major agricultural problems. Several members of the clade, exemplified by Sorghum halepense (Johnsongrass) offer insights into weediness and invasion biology. The first sequence for a member of the clade, sorghum, as well as progress and challenges toward sequencing of additional members and the new opportunities that this will create, are also explored. Indeed, the very complexities that have hindered study of some clade members also offer intriguing opportunities to gain insight into fundamental questions such as roles of polyploidy in agricultural productivity and post-polyploidy evolution.
