This monograph, first published in 1974, is an attempt to demonstrate the usefulness of the theory of stochastic processes in understanding biologic phenomena at various levels of complexity - from the molecular to the ecologic level. The modeling of biologic systems via stochastic processes allows the incorporation of effects of secondary factors for which a detailed knowledge is missing. In the first two chapters of the monograph, the authors present the mathematic analysis used in the later chapters. The authors attempted to make the chapters self-contained and to make the book comprehensive, bringing in results derived by different authors using a variety of techniques and notations. In later chapters, where models of various biologic phenomena are discussed, introductory reviews of those phenomena are given for readers with less biologic background. Nira Dyn is a professor of Applied Mathematics at Tel-Aviv University in Israel since 1984. Her main field of activity now is Geometric Modeling. Her previous research interests were in Approximation Theory and in Mathematical Modeling of Biological systems. She is now serving in the editorial boards of the Journal of Approximation Theory and of the journal Computer Aided Geometric Design. She wrote more than 130 papers, and participated actively in more than 80 conferences and workshops. Her education was in Applied Mathematics in Israeli institutions; B.Sc from the Technion, Haifa, in 1965, M.Sc from the Weizmann Institute, Rehovot, in 1967, Ph.D. from the Weizmann Institute, Rehovot in 1970.

This book is intended as a text for a first course in stochastic processes at the upper undergraduate or graduate levels, assuming only that the reader has had a serious calculus course-advanced calculus would even be better-as well as a first course in probability (without measure theory). In guiding the student from the simplest classical models to some of the spatial models, currently the object of considerable research, the text is aimed at a broad audience of students in biology, engineering, mathematics, and physics. The first two chapters deal with discrete Markov chains-recurrence and tran sience, random walks, birth and death chains, ruin problem and branching pro cesses-and their stationary distributions. These classical topics are treated with a modem twist: in particular, the coupling technique is introduced in the first chap ter and is used throughout. The third chapter deals with continuous time Markov chains-Poisson process, queues, birth and death chains, stationary distributions. The second half of the book treats spatial processes. This is the main difference between this work and the many others on stochastic processes. Spatial stochas tic processes are (rightly) known as being difficult to analyze. The few existing books on the subject are technically challenging and intended for a mathemat ically sophisticated reader. We picked several interesting models-percolation, cellular automata, branching random walks, contact process on a tree-and con centrated on those properties that can be analyzed using elementary methods.

This expository book presents the mathematical description of evolutionary models of populations subject to interactions (e.g. competition) within the population. The author includes both models of finite populations, and limiting models as the size of the population tends to infinity. The size of the population is described as a random function of time and of the initial population (the ancestors at time 0). The genealogical tree of such a population is given. Most models imply that the population is bound to go extinct in finite time. It is explained when the interaction is strong enough so that the extinction time remains finite, when the ancestral population at time 0 goes to infinity. The material could be used for teaching stochastic processes, together with their applications. Étienne Pardoux is Professor at Aix-Marseille University, working in the field of Stochastic Analysis, stochastic partial differential equations, and probabilistic models in evolutionary biology and population genetics. He obtained his PhD in 1975 at University of Paris-Sud.

All populations fluctuate stochastically, creating a risk of extinction that does not exist in deterministic models, with fundamental consequences for both pure and applied ecology. This book provides the most comprehensive introduction to stochastic population dynamics, combining classical background material with a variety of modern approaches, including new and previously unpublished results by the authors, illustrated with examples from bird and mammal populations, and insect communities.Demographic and environmental stochasticity are introduced with statistical methods for estimating them from field data. The long-run growth rate of a population is explained and extended to include age structure with both deomgraphic and environmental stochasticity. Diffusion approximations facilitate the analysis of extinction dynamics and the duration of the final decline. Methods are developed for estimating delayed density dependence from population time series using life history data. Analysis of the stochastic dynamics of a tropical butterfly community in space and time indicates that most of the variance in the species abundance distribution is due to ecological heterogeneity among species, so that real communities are far from neutral.
