Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2014 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: 1,0, University of Leipzig, language: English, abstract: The following paper was developed in the context of internationalization in education and how international education can be promoted. According to a popular online encyclopedia, internationalization in a broader sense can be regarded as international activities, mostly regarded in an economic sense as the process of increasing involvement of enterprises in international markets (see: Wikipedia/internationalization) However, international activities in the economy not only affect economies itself but also societies worldwide. Therefore, people involved need to adapt their perspective from a national towards a more international one. Thus, activities towards internationalization should first of all be promoted in education for students to acquire the necessary intercultural knowledge to be equipped with the necessary competencies to become a global citizen.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2007 im Fachbereich Englisch - Pädagogik, Didaktik, Sprachwissenschaft, Note: 13, Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main (Institut für England- und Amerikastudien), Veranstaltung: The Secret Formula, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Nowadays it is necessary to be able to speak english, because this language is getting more and more important and it is the basis of international communication. So pupils have to learn as early as possible to have a strong command of this language and to use it effectively. Communicative language teaching (CLT) emphasizes communicative skills and wants communicative practise at the centre of classroom learning. According to Savignon, communicative competence is the central theoretical concept of CLT (2004). She defines this competence with the terms of expressions, interpretation and negociation of meaning. Hedge says that it is important for CLT to encourage pupils to communicate their needs, ideas and opinions and also that they are able to operate effectively in the real world (2000:44-45). She writes that in the communicative language classroom pupils have to learn to use that language in certain settings and authentic situations. According to both authors, CLT helps to develop certain communicative skills and to come to terms with the language without any grave problems of expressing thoughts, wishes, opinions, etc. The language learner has to indentify him with that language so that he can apply his knowledge without any fear and uncertainity. And it is important that the teacher applies grammar based exercises as an integral part of real live tasks. Otherwise the learners could get bored, detered or even overtaxed with grammatical units. Hedge claims too, that a teacher`s intervention to correct should be as minimal as possible (2000:58). We can integrate grammatical units in activities where learners are supposed to talk about their next holiday plans and therefore they need to use several f

Storytelling in Early Childhood is a captivating book which explores the multiple dimensions of storytelling and story acting and shows how they enrich language and literacy learning in the early years. Foregrounding the power of children’s own stories in the early and primary years, it provides evidence that storytelling and story acting, a pedagogic approach first developed by Vivian Gussin Paley, affords rich opportunities to foster learning within a play-based and language-rich curriculum. The book explores a number of themes and topics, including: the role of imaginary play and its dynamic relationship to narrative; how socially situated symbolic actions enrich the emotional, cognitive and social development of children; how the interrelated practices of storytelling and dramatisation enhance language and literacy learning, and contribute to an inclusive classroom culture; the challenges practitioners face in aligning their understanding of child literacy and learning with a narrow, mandated curriculum which focuses on measurable outcomes. Driven by an international approach and based on new empirical studies, this volume further advances the field, offering new theoretical and practical analyses of storytelling and story acting from complementary disciplinary perspectives. This book is a potent and engaging read for anyone intrigued by Paley’s storytelling and story acting curriculum, as well as those practitioners and students with a vested interest in early years literacy and language learning. With contributions from Vivian Gussin Paley, Patricia ‘Patsy‘ Cooper, Dorothy Faulkner, Natalia Kucirkova, Gillian Dowley McNamee and Ageliki Nicolopoulou.

This book brings together researchers from across the globe to share their work on the micro-analyses of storytelling. By doing so, the book helps to deepen the understanding of, and track storytelling practices cross-culturally and longitudinally in the home, at school, and in higher education. Through the unique focus on education and learning, this book provides a lens with which to identify how children’s and adolescents’ language development and sense of self in storytelling are supported in various contexts: the home, classroom, playground or in the higher education context. It explores the work, identity and practices of friends, teachers and lecturers in teaching, learning, reflection and supervision. Importantly, in identifying these practices, the book presents opportunities to assist parents and teachers, to inform pedagogy in teacher education, and to support effective doctoral supervision. The focus on storytelling in homes, education, and for learning, and the practical applications of the findings, contribute to the ongoing research in both education and conversation analysis. The ability to effectively communicate with individuals from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds is an invaluable asset. Learning a second language proves useful as students navigate the culturally diverse world; however, studying a second language can be difficult for learners who are not immersed in the real and natural environment of the foreign language. Also, changes in education and advancements in information and communication technologies pose a number of challenges for implementing and maintaining sound practices within technology-enhanced language learning (TELL). Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Technology-Enhanced Language Learning provides information on educational technologies that enable language learners to have access to authentic and useful language resources. Readers will explore themes such as language pedagogy, how specific and universal cultural contexts influence audio-visual media used in technology-enhanced language learning (TELL), and the use of English video games to promote foreign language learning. This book is a valuable resource for academicians, education practitioners, advanced-level students, and school administrators seeking to improve language learning through technology-based resources.

Storybridge To Second Language Literacy written by Irma-Kaarina Ghosn and has been published by Information Age Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with Children categories.

Storybridge to Second Language Literacy makes a case for using authentic children's literature- alternately also referred to as 'stories' or 'real books'-as the medium of instruction in teaching English to young learners, particularly in contexts where children must access general curriculum subjects in English. The author first proposes theoretical foundations for the argument that illustrated children's books are superior to traditional language teaching courses in the primary school. She builds the case around the motivational power of stories, the language and content of quality children's literature, and the potential of literature to contribute to development of second language academic literacy. She then reviews research of the past thirty years that clearly supports her claim. Finally, she uses transcripts from real classrooms to illustrate how teachers in diverse contexts make use of stories. Through the classroom vignettes, a practical model of literature-based instruction emerges that is adaptable to a wide range of primary school teaching contexts, including English as a second language contexts in core-English countries. Storybridge to Second Language Literacy compiles in one volume solid theoretical foundations for story-based instruction, research evidence of the past thirty years supporting the approach (not currently available in a single source), and extensive classroom vignettes illustrating diverse practical applications (not lesson plans). This makes the book valuable for anyone in the field of young learner ELT. MA students in TESOL will find the book useful and will develop an understanding of why and how literature-based instruction works and develop insight to guide their practice. Members of TESOL Elementary Education, EFL, and Bilingual Education SIGs, and IATEFL Young Learner SIG will be interested in the volume. Instructors of teacher development courses should also find the proposed volume a valuable addition to assigned readings. Each chapter is followed by 'Think about it' questions and 'Try it out' suggestions.

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject Didactics - English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 1,3, University of Erfurt (Anglistik), course: Teaching English in Primary School: Current State of Affairs and Future Developments, language: English, abstract: All over the world stories are told to people and children. This phenomenon is very old. Just think of cave-painting which told stories to others only with the usage of pictures. By and by, following generations shared the same principle. That is the same how it went on with stories and fairy-tales. They bring culture along having a great value according to their contents, texts and language which are authentic. And so they are worth to use them in the classroom to teach a foreign language in connection with cultural features. The offer of children’s literature covers old-known and new published books all the time that pupils could not be bored of. The teacher can prepare them in a way that the stories suit the children in conformity with their age, mental stage and interests. So stories are still up to date and being loved by the children, providing a familiar context. There are so many that it is easy to find some for the English speaking classroom. The problem of detecting good stories is more likely. By courtesy of knowledge about the children’s interests and the exercise to look over a new book and to know if it is a good one or not, it will be easy to compile a personal bibliography of children’s literature. They are proved to pick up previous knowledge of children in the classroom. So storytelling has been established by many English teachers as a worthwhile method. That is the reason for lots of material according to storytelling, which can be found in the internet and in educational literature. In this term paper, I am going to demonstrate the didactic functions of storytelling starting with the concept of this method. Main points will be cognitive aims while learning a foreign language by means of stories. After all, a further point will be the usage of it, beginning with the choice of the story and ending with the telling of it. Another chapter will be about the features that make a good storyteller

"Integral to the tapestry of social interaction, storytelling is the focus of interest for scholars from a diverse range of academic disciplines. This volume combines the study of Conversation Analysis (CA) with storytelling in multilingual contexts to examine how multilingual speakers converse and manage various aspects of storytelling, and how they accomplish a wide range of actions through storytelling in classroom and everyday settings. An original, book-length endeavour devoted exclusively to storytelling in multilingual contexts, this book contributes to broadening the scope of the foundational conversation analytic literature on storytelling and to further specifying the nature of second language (L2) interactional competence. Designed for pre-service and in-service second or foreign language teachers, students of applied linguistics, as well as scholars interested in storytelling, this volume explores the cross-linguistic nature of generic interactional practices, sheds light on the nature of translanguaging and learner language, and provides insights into teacher practices on managing classroom storytelling"--
