In this chilling true crime thriller by New York Times bestselling journalist M. William Phelps, a woman’s mysterious death in upstate New York plunges her family into a nightmare of accusations and vengeance. In July 2015, Mary Yoder fell ill in the chiropractic center she operated with her husband, Bill. Doctors in the ER and ICU were baffled—and unable to save her life. Weeks later, her family received startling news from the medical examiner: Mary had been deliberately poisoned. Another shock followed when the local sheriff received a claim that Adam Yoder had poisoned his mother. But Adam was not the only person of interest . . . Kaitlyn Conley, Adam’s ex-girlfriend, worked at the Yoders’ clinic and was at Mary’s bedside during her last hours. Still, some spoke of her history of rage-fueled behavior. Had Kaitlyn and Adam conspired to kill Mary? Yet another suspect emerged when accusations were hurled at grieving husband Bill Yoder . . . M. William Phelps unravels a twisting trail of evidence to reveal the heartless scheme that tore a family apart, divided a community, and culminated in two gripping, high-profile trials. “Phelps is the Harlan Coben of real-life thrillers.” —Allison Brennan “Phelps knows how to work it.” —Marilyn Stasio, The New York Times Book Review “Anything by Phelps is an eye-opening experience.” —Suspense Magazine

The bestselling author of Targeted shares the identity of the serial killer who co-starred with him on Dark Minds and the story of their intriguing bond. In September 2011, M. William Phelps made a decision that would change reality-based television—and his own life. He asked a convicted serial killer to act as a consultant for his TV series. Under the code name “Raven,” the murderer shared his insights into the minds of other killers and helped analyze their crimes. As the series became an international sensation, Raven became Phelps's unlikely confidante, ally—and friend. In this deeply personal account, Phelps traces his own family's dark history, and takes us into the heart and soul of a serial murderer. He also chronicles the complex relationship he developed with Raven. From questions about morality to Raven's thoughts on the still-unsolved, brutal murder of Phelps's sister-in-law, the author found himself grappling with an unwanted, unexpected, unsettling connection with a cold-blooded killer. Drawing on over seven thousand pages of letters, dozens of hours of recorded conversations, personal and Skype visits, and a friendship five years in the making, Phelps sheds new light on Raven's bloody history, including details of an unknown victim, the location of a still-buried body—and a jaw-dropping admission. All this makes for an unforgettable journey into the mind of a charming, manipulative psychopath that few would dare to know—and the determined journalist who did just that. Praise for New York Times bestselling author M. William Phelps “Anything by Phelps is an eye-opening experience.” —Suspense Magazine “Phelps is the king of true crime.” —Lynda Hirsch, Creators Syndicate columnist

How new genetic techniques are revolutionizing the study of neural circuits for both invertebrate and vertebrate systems. Understanding how specific types of neurons contribute to behaviour is an ambitious goal. For invertebrate model systems (e.g. worms, flies), neurons in the brain are often too small to be studied routinely by electrophysiological approaches. For vertebrates, large ensembles of cells have to be studied, and these cells are often distributed over considerable volumes e.g. GABAergic interneurons in neocortex. Cell type-selective manipulations may be a way forward for treating illness. Before such aims can be realized, or even appreciated as feasible, the brain circuitry in experimental animals has to be known by both establishing the connections between cell types and reversibly manipulating the activity of the cells subtype-selectively. Methods that have all appeared in just the last couple of years to tackle this include: retrograde tracing of circuitry using viruses, ligand-receptor combinations that make subtypes of neurons uniquely sensitive to a drug (e.g. zolpidem, allatostatin, serotonin ligands or ivermectin), and light-activated channels and pumps for stimulation and inhibition. This collection of methods promises much, forming the new subdisciplines of “pharmacogenetics” and “opticogenetics”. These methods are revolutionizing the study of brain circuitry for both invertebrates and vertebrate systems.

The New York Times bestselling true crime author investigates a shocking case of a wife, mother, and murder in the Iowa suburbs. Iowa housewife Tracey Pittman Roberts seemed to have it all: natural beauty, three loving children, and a fairy tale second marriage to a wealthy businessman. But beneath the happy façade was a woman who used lies, manipulation, sex, ugly allegations, blackmail—and even murder—to serve her own selfish ends. On December 13, 2001, police rushed to Tracey’s home after a shooting left her young neighbor dead. Tracey claimed it was an act of self-defense. Nine gunshot wounds—and a decades-long trail of extortion, fabrication, fraud, and intimidation—said otherwise. Ten years after the crime, Tracey’s case finally went to trial in an explosive courtroom showdown. In a searing exploration of the criminal mind, acclaimed investigative journalist M. William Phelps traces the saga of a psychopath who hid in plain sight—until her wicked ways caught up with her. “Phelps is one of America’s finest true-crime authors.” —Vincent Bugliosi “Phelps is the Harlan Coben of real-life thrillers.” —Allison Brennan
