However, they still struggle with acceptance problems due to the hazardous mercury, which serves as the radiant component inside the lamp. The presented work deals with the development of a mercury-free, electrodeless, low pressure plasma based on a molecular filling and driven by microwaves, which may represent a viable alternative to the conventional CFLs.

In freeform optics, the optimization is limited due to large number of parameters present in it. This limitation was overcome by a technique known as optimization using freeform deformation (OFFD). Though this technique proved to work well, it has left many challenges to the optical designer. These challenges are solved by providing mathematical design techniques. This implementation transformed the OFFD into an intelligent tool replacing the optical designer's efforts during the design process.

Diese Arbeit befasst sich mit den Auswirkungen der Degradation, der in der LED eingesetzten Packagematerialien auf die Gesamtalterung von LED-Bauteilen. Dazu werden die im Bauteil vorkommenden Fehlermechanismen anhand der Alterung der verwendeten Packagematerialien beschrieben, vorhergesagt und miteinander in Verbindung gesetzt. Aus den gewonnenen Erkenntnissen werden Ansätze zur Verbesserung der Langzeitstabilität von LED-Baugruppen abgeleitet. - This work deals with the material degradation of LED package materials and their contribution to degradation of the whole LED device. The occurring failure modes within the LED package are described and predicted by the degradation of the used package materials. Based on these findings approaches for long lifetime LEDs are derived.

In this work describes the development of a light-based driver assistance system through projections on the road. Under realistic conditions it is shown that information can be transmitted to the driver at night by using projections in front of the vehicle: test persons drive more safely through narrow spaces and react earlier to obstacles. A prototype suitable for road use demonstrates the possibility of a near-series implementation of such a headlamp projection system.
