The study looks at how students are engaging with generative AI through institutional resources. The study details use of courses, websites, online tutorials and other means to learn about how to use generative artificial intelligence. The survey highlights the varying levels of usage and the reliance on formal and informal learning methods among college students. Results are based on a 2025 representative survey of 1022 students at 4-year colleges and research universities in the USA. Jus a few of this 155-page report's many findings are that: ¿30.14% of students have used academic resources provided by their institution to learn about generative AI. ¿Students at higher-cost institutions ($20,000+) are more likely (36.03%) to use academic resources compared to those at lower-cost institutions (27.34%). Private school students (35.90%) are significantly more likely to use resources compared to public school students (28.43%). ¿International students were more avid users than domestic students of college instructional resources about generative AI. ¿Student complaints about being unable to find information about how to use AI were quite common. ¿Students face challenges such as lack of awareness, institutional discouragement, and unclear policies on AI use. They express a need for more structured education, clear guidelines, and greater access to AI tools. The survey suggests that while institutional resources for learning about generative AI exist, most students rely on informal methods such as peers, AI tools, and online content. There is a clear need to expand structured AI education to better support student learning

This study presents detailed data on use of ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, Claude, MidJourney and CoPilot, among other applications, by students at 4-year colleges in the United States The highly detailed report shows exactly how many minutes per month students spend on each application. The study also looks at the extent to which students use AI to replace or complement their internet searches. In addition, students report on whether they have paid subscriptions to various AI applications and evaluate just how important it is to them to develop their AI-usage skills. Data in the report is presented in the aggregate and broken out by 19 variables including but not limited to age, academic major, gender, sexual orientation, SAT/GRE scores, college grades, race or ethnicity, religion, college tuition charged, public and private college status and many other characteristics. Just a few of this 215-page report's Key Findings: 1.ChatGPT emerged as the most widely used AI tool, with 64.77% of students reporting usage in the past month. Other AI tools such as Microsoft CoPilot (15.46%) and Gemini (13.60%) also saw notable adoption., while tools like Claude (5.77%), Midjourney (1.66%), and Grok (0.98%) had relatively low usage. 2.Use of ChatGPT was more popular at higher-tuition institutions (79.35% usage at colleges with tuition above $20,000) compared to lower-tuition colleges (53.93% at those under $6,000). 3.Students from major cities and those raised abroad showed higher usage of ChatGPT. 4.Microsoft CoPilot was most used in Engineering and Criminology/Law Enforcement majors. 5.Male students and those identifying as Hindu or politically moderate also showed higher AI adoption rates. 6.A significant portion of students (59.24%) considered learning generative AI "somewhat important" to "very important," with higher interest among private college students, high-income families, and STEM majors.

Designing Instruction with Generative AI offers a novel set of tools and strategies for leveraging generative AI to create engaging and personalized learning experiences. While instructional designers are a tremendous asset to higher education, not all colleges or universities have the robust staff needed to support all instructors on staff or large student populations. Drawing on a wealth of research, professional experience, and strategic insights, this book equips new and seasoned teaching faculty and trainers with step-by-step directions on how freely accessible artificial intelligence software can assist with all aspects of the course creation and instruction process and cater to the needs of diverse learners. Each chapter offers forward-thinking and empirically validated ways to help faculty create and improve instructional materials, course design, and learning environments while supporting their digital literacies. Rather than introduce AI as a means of outsourcing subject-area expertise, critical thinking, or cognitive processes, the author instead emphasizes its potential to build on traditionally honed knowledge and foundational instructional design practices. From optimizing course alignment and accessibility practices to fostering active learning, motivation, and engagement, educators will find new solutions to common teaching and learning challenges with greater efficiency in time and capacity.
