The Second Vatican Council, the Encyclical Humanae Vitae, the controversy over Hans Kÿng's book on infallibility and the subsequent declaration of Rome that he could no longer teach as a Catholic theologian, the colloquium to which Edward Schillebeeckx was summoned by the Vatican, the pastoral letter of the American bishops on the question of nuclear warfare--have all stimulated a lively discussion of the claims of the Catholic hierarchy to authoritative magisterium. With all the abundance of literature on the subject, a book was still needed that would offer an up-to-date, systematic presentation of Catholic thinking about the nature and function of this magisterium. This is what the present volume sets out to provide. It takes as its point of departure the belief which a great many Christians besides Catholics share, namely, that the Church of Christ is maintained in the truth of the Gospel by the Holy Spirit. It then examines the various ministries by which the Gospel has been handed on and interpreted for each generation of believers, looking especially to the role of the bishops, and among them, of the Bishop of Rome, in settling disputes about the faith. The foundational inquiries into the relationship of miracles and Christology by Wrede, Dibelius, Bultmann and Marxsen guided a productive half-century of critical research. Their work raised crucial issues concerning the nature of the Gospels and the proper methods of interpretation that have in many ways charted the direction for New Testament studies. A new principle is now to be added to their criteria, however, that strategies of interpretation must be consciously shaped to highlight the features of narrative and its christological focus. The author then employs a consistent narrative strategy of interpretation in order to re-evaluate the relation of miracles and Christology in the Gospel of Mark. The primary goal is reconsideration of the role played by miracle stories in the characterization of Jesus. In particular, the tension posed by recent scholarship between the Jesus of the miracles and the Jesus of the cross is shown to be a false dichotomy.

This book asserts that authority is a contested category and explores why traditional notions of authority are increasingly in tension with progressive and postmodern claims, devolving into stalemate, schizophrenia, or power plays. Offering a Christian framework as a philosophically coherent and practical alternative for teachers, the author argues that Jesus provides a pattern from which to reconstruct our conception of teaching authority in ways that align with evidence-informed teaching practices and cultivate intellectual virtues. Rather than examine "Jesus as teacher", the book instead applies the central insight on authority that Jesus embodies. This authority with which Jesus taught, it argues, stemmed from his passion--that is, passive, even suffering, experience. The author aligns this to a subject-centered conception of teaching (as opposed to student-centered or teacher-centered) in which the subject is the authority and knowing is identified with being acted upon by the subject. Teaching with authority thereby becomes a matter of unveiling suffering with students and inviting them into their own suffering encounter with the subject. Building on the work on Parker Palmer and exploring pedagogical practice from a Christian perspective, this book will appeal to scholars and researchers with interests in higher education, evidence-based teaching, educational theory, religion and education, and Christian history and thought.
