These ten lectures articulate a distinctive vision of the structure and workings of the human mind, drawing from research on embodied cognition as well as from historically more entrenched approaches to the study of human thought. On the author’s view, multifarious materials co-contribute to the production of virtually all forms of human behavior, rendering implausible the idea that human action is best explained by processes taking place in an autonomous mental arena – those in the conscious mind or occurring at the so-called personal level. Rather, human behavior issues from a widely varied, though nevertheless integrated, collection of states and mechanisms, the integrated nature of which is determined by a form of clustering in the components’ contributions to the production of intelligent behavior. This package of resources, the cognitive system, is the human self. Among its elements, the cognitive system includes a vast number of representations, many subsets of which share their content. On the author’s view, redundancy of content itself constitutes an important explanatory quantity; the greater the extent of content-redundancy among representations that co-contribute to the production of an instance of behavior, the more fluid the behavior. In the course of developing and applying these views, the author addresses questions about the content of mental representations, extended cognition, the value of knowledge, and group minds.

Since the beginning of life, all plant and animal kingdoms have been developed or modified based on gravity along with atmospheric composition and solar radiation existing on Earth. Gravity is mainly encoded by the otolithic sensors of the vestibular system but its role has been largely underestimated in favor of the vestibular semicircular canals and reduced to oculomotor and postural coordination. Over the last decade, it has been demonstrated that sensory information provided by the vestibular system is crucial in spatial-memory processes in rats and humans. More recently a role in attention processes has been raised. This topic aims to report and demonstrate the role and integration of vestibular information in cognitive processes in rodent models and human at the behavioral, imaging and electrophysiological levels.

People and animals – broadly, “animates” – are important, dynamic forces in the natural world. They represent social targets such as friends and enemies, economic and romantic partners, predators and prey, and companions. Most importantly, unlike inanimate objects, animate agents have internal goals and drives that cause them to act on the world, rather than simply be acted on. In short, animates fill our world with novel causes, and have been a consistent selection pressure over the course of evolution – human and nonhuman. Cognitive scientists have long acknowledged the importance of animacy, investigating it as a perceptual phenomenon, as a component of language, a natural category, a demand on attention, a dimension of neurological organization, and more recently as an important factor in memory. Although animacy has been a dimension of interest in cognitive science for quite some time, cognitive scientists from different subdisciplines interested in animacy (e.g., perception, attention, language, and memory) rarely talk with one another to synthesize findings across subfields. A major goal of this research topic is to solicit articles from across cognitive science (in a broad sense) that investigate the role that animacy plays in cognition, in the hopes that authors and readers may begin to see the “bigger picture” regarding how animacy influences the mind. We hope that by bringing together researchers from across cognitive science we will hear from a diverse set of perspectives regarding animacy, representing a variety of research questions and methodologies within this larger topic. In Cognitive Linguistics, polysemy is regarded as a categorizing phenomenon; i.e., related meanings of words form categories centering around a prototype and bearing family resemblance relations to one another. Under this polysemy = categorization view, the scope of investigation has been gradually broadened from categories in the lexical and lexico-grammatical domain to morphological, syntactic, and phonological categories. The papers in this volume illustrate the importance of polysemy in describing these various categories. A first set of papers analyzes the polysemy of such lexical categories as prepositions and scalar particles, and looks at the import of polysemy in frame-based dictionary definitions. A second set shows that noun classes, case, and locative prefixes constitute meaningful and polysemous categories. Three papers, then, pay attention to polysemy from a psychological perspective, looking for psychological evidence of polysemy in lexical categories.
