The theory of operator spaces is very recent and can be described as a non-commutative Banach space theory. An 'operator space' is simply a Banach space with an embedding into the space B(H) of all bounded operators on a Hilbert space H. The first part of this book is an introduction with emphasis on examples that illustrate various aspects of the theory. The second part is devoted to applications to C*-algebras, with a systematic exposition of tensor products of C*-algebras. The third (and shorter) part of the book describes applications to non self-adjoint operator algebras, and similarity problems. In particular the author's counterexample to the 'Halmos problem' is presented, as well as work on the new concept of 'length' of an operator algebra. Graduate students and professional mathematicians interested in functional analysis, operator algebras and theoretical physics will find that this book has much to offer.

' This book is essential reading for experts in the theory of operator spaces, and for those who want to learn the banach space style advances of the last decade in operator spaces.' Bulletin of the LMSThis book combines an elementary introduction to the theory of 'quantized Banach spaces' with a discussion of some of its most surprising non-classical aspects. Only elementary notions of functional analysis are used, hence the book will be accessible to a wide range of researchers in analysis, mathematical physics, and quantum computation.

$\textrm{C}*$-approximation theory has provided the foundation for many of the most important conceptual breakthroughs and applications of operator algebras. This book systematically studies (most of) the numerous types of approximation properties that have been important in recent years: nuclearity, exactness, quasidiagonality, local reflexivity, and others. Moreover, it contains user-friendly proofs, insofar as that is possible, of many fundamental results that were previously quite hard to extract from the literature. Indeed, perhaps the most important novelty of the first ten chapters is an earnest attempt to explain some fundamental, but difficult and technical, results as painlessly as possible. The latter half of the book presents related topics and applications--written with researchers and advanced, well-trained students in mind. The authors have tried to meet the needs both of students wishing to learn the basics of an important area of research as well as researchers who desire a fairly comprehensive reference for the theory and applications of $\textrm{C}*$-approximation theory.

From the reviews: "This book is an excellent and comprehensive survey of the theory of von Neumann algebras. It includes all the fundamental results of the subject, and is a valuable reference for both the beginner and the expert." (Math. Reviews) "In theory, this book can be read by a well-trained third-year graduate student - but the reader had better have a great deal of mathematical sophistication. The specialist in this and allied areas will find the wealth of recent results and new approaches throughout the text especially rewarding." (American Scientist) "The title of this book at once suggests comparison with the two volumes of Dixmier and the fact that one can seriously make this comparison indicates that it is a far more substantial work that others on this subject which have recently appeared"(BLMSoc)

The theory of crossed products is extremely rich and intriguing. There are applications not only to operator algebras, but to subjects as varied as noncommutative geometry and mathematical physics. This book provides a detailed introduction to this vast subject suitable for graduate students and others whose research has contact with crossed product $C*$-algebras. in addition to providing the basic definitions and results, the main focus of this book is the fine ideal structure of crossed products as revealed by the study of induced representations via the Green-Mackey-Rieffel machine. in particular, there is an in-depth analysis of the imprimitivity theorems on which Rieffel's theory of induced representations and Morita equivalence of $C*$-algebras are based. There is also a detailed treatment of the generalized Effros-Hahn conjecture and its proof due to Gootman, Rosenberg, and Sauvageot. This book is meant to be self-contained and accessible to any graduate student coming out of a first course on operator algebras. There are appendices that deal with ancillary subjects, which while not central to the subject, are nevertheless crucial for a complete understanding of the material. Some of the appendices will be of independent interest. to view another book by this author, please visit Morita Equivalence and Continuous-Trace $C*$-Algebras.

In this book, first published in 2003, the reader is provided with a tour of the principal results and ideas in the theories of completely positive maps, completely bounded maps, dilation theory, operator spaces and operator algebras, together with some of their main applications. The author assumes only that the reader has a basic background in functional analysis, and the presentation is self-contained and paced appropriately for graduate students new to the subject. Experts will also want this book for their library since the author illustrates the power of methods he has developed with new and simpler proofs of some of the major results in the area, many of which have not appeared earlier in the literature. An indispensable introduction to the theory of operator spaces for all who want to know more.

Is there a vector space whose dimension is the golden ratio? Of course not—the golden ratio is not an integer! But this can happen for generalizations of vector spaces—objects of a tensor category. The theory of tensor categories is a relatively new field of mathematics that generalizes the theory of group representations. It has deep connections with many other fields, including representation theory, Hopf algebras, operator algebras, low-dimensional topology (in particular, knot theory), homotopy theory, quantum mechanics and field theory, quantum computation, theory of motives, etc. This book gives a systematic introduction to this theory and a review of its applications. While giving a detailed overview of general tensor categories, it focuses especially on the theory of finite tensor categories and fusion categories (in particular, braided and modular ones), and discusses the main results about them with proofs. In particular, it shows how the main properties of finite-dimensional Hopf algebras may be derived from the theory of tensor categories. Many important results are presented as a sequence of exercises, which makes the book valuable for students and suitable for graduate courses. Many applications, connections to other areas, additional results, and references are discussed at the end of each chapter.
