Grit—defined as persistence and passion despite obstacles—has received much attention, yet books on this theme often idolize achievements at the expense of mental health. For instance, by the time Ernest Hemingway earned the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954, he had demonstrated true grit by enduring an injury of war, witnessing the Spanish Civil War, and writing fifteen groundbreaking volumes of literature. Yet by 1961, he had divorced three women and died by suicide. This book shifts the paradigm around grit away from accomplishments to a far more attainable and pleasing end: life satisfaction, which results in a deep, abiding, and overarching sense of contentment with life. A Practical Approach to Life Satisfaction argues that constantly striving to pursue accolades is more likely to drive individuals into the ground instead of leading them to fulfillment. However, when grit works together with emotional intelligence, it can yield marked improvements in life satisfaction. Written in an engaging style, this book is an essential resource for teachers, parents, and others who shape the next generation. It weaves academic content with personal narratives and reflective questions so you can hone the tool of grit with emotional intelligence to achieve life satisfaction.

Everyone has a legitimate desire to have a better life. Having a better life could mean different things to different people. What a man considers to be a better life may be different from what a woman considers to be a better. Also, what a young person considers a better life would be different from what an older person considers a better life. For a young person in their 20s, better life could mean having many materials things (car, house, clothes, money, etc.) which they believe would make them happy. For older people, a 'better life" for them would be living their dream with lots of passion, lots of laughter and love, which of course brings happiness to them. Not a material thing in sight! Even though our definition of what a better life is can change over the years, the steps we take to how we can attain that "better life" doesn't really change. As Elbert Hubbard said, a sculptor creates the beautiful statue through a process of chipping away the parts of the marble that are not needed. This process of elimination is what we need to take on board as we try to eliminate those things that we do which prevent us from attaining a "better life for ourselves". No matter your age or gender, and whatever "better life" means to you, you can attain that legitimate desire by chipping away those parts of your life that are not needed. Also, if you do want to create change in your life, get clear on the definition of what a better life is for YOU. This will help you identify the key things that you need to STOP DOING so that you can have a better life.

Dark Emotions is a book about a range of emotional experiences that are often regarded or characterized as ‘negative’, ‘disturbing’ or ‘dark’ as contrasted with emotions that are ‘positive’, ‘pleasant’ or ‘light’. Each chapter in the book is devoted to introducing different ‘dark emotions’ such as disappointment, betrayal, worry, regret, resentment and alienation and seeks to show – through conceptual, theoretical and empirical examples – how these emotions influence peoples’ lives and their relations to self, others and society. The book thus provides an overview of some dark emotions that are recognizable in our everyday lives and culture. It contains accessible introductions and relevant theoretical and empirical research on 12 different kinds of ‘dark emotions’. The chapters are highly useful for teaching sessions and research contexts. Additionally, they provide extensive lists of references for further reading. The book will be particularly useful for students or scholars with an interest in emotion research or related areas, and the book may inspire further investigation of the often- overlooked emotions presented in this volume.
