This collection represents the first large scale attempt to discuss the Middle Eastern mandates as a totality. It compares the application and effects of this very specific form of late colonialism from a variety of different disciplinary perspectives, including anthropology, architecture, archival conservation, economics, history, law and sociology. It contains analyses at both micro and macro levels, including specific instances of revolt or collaboration, studies of particular individuals, of professional groups and their contributions to “nation-building,” comparisons between the various political and cultural policies of the mandatory powers, and the formation and practice of "le savoir colonial" by contemporary ethnographers, officials, physicians and teachers. The volume will be of interest to historians of imperialism and of the twentieth century Middle East.

The scholarly search on the art of the object is of enduring interest and enjoys a new renaissance in the last few years. This book mainly explores the art and craft of Islamic artefacts and presents to the reader a diverse range of approaches. Despite this variety, in which also artefacts of the pre-Islamic, period as well as 'orientalized' European artefacts of the modern era are included, there is an overarching theme – the linking of the interpretation of objects and their specific aesthetics to textual sources and the aim of setting them in historical and artistic context. In this impressive collection honouring the German scholar of Islamic art Jens Kröger on his 65th birthday, Avinoam Shalem and Annette Hagedorn bring together contributions from a highly distinguished group of scholars of Asiatic, Sasanian, Islamic as well as European art history. Unpublished artefacts and new interpretations are presented in this book.

CHRISTOPHE DUPONT (1922-2010), after a career in international negotiations as an economist at the International Monetary Fund and then the European Investment Bank, was active in the conflict and negotiation field as a professor, consultant and researcher. He contributed to the establishment of negotiation research in France and beyond, writing extensively on negotiation, and inspiring a generation of conflict management scholars in the francophone world. A practitioner turned scholar, Dupont successfully bridged theory and practice, and can be considered as one of the thought leaders of our field. Many of his contributions are presented in this volume along with chapters from several well-known colleagues influenced by his work. This book inaugurates a new mini-series titled Careers in Negotiation and Conflict Management Research. It aims to honor outstanding scholars who have opened original paths in uncharted areas, as well as to shed new light on their legacy thanks to the contributions of colleagues. "This is a remarkable initiative concerning a prominent figure in negotiation research, Christophe Dupont. I was privileged to be a close colleague for more than three decades. His exceptional work on synthesis, classification, and framework development helped our academic community to organize the considerable amount of research published during the past few decades. An economist who ventured well beyond that discipline, his broad vision brought him into contact with scholars from sociology, psychology, and political science. These collaborations contributed in important ways to our understanding of the complex world that must be navigated by negotiators. This book, dedicated to his contributions to negotiation scholarship, is an excellent start for a ground-breaking series on thought leaders."
