Most evaluations of teacher performance are brief, superficial, pro forma affairs involving a few moments of classroom observation every year or two followed by the completion of required evaluation forms. Not surprisingly, much of what has been written about teacher evaluation over the past decade reflects the dissatisfaction of teachers, the frustration of administrators, and the confusion of all parties as to the proper purposes for and methods of teacher evaluation. In this long-awaited book, Richard J. Stiggins and Daniel L. Duke approach teacher evaluation from a positive perspective. They present the results of three unique studies from over a three-year period, designed to uncover the inherent problems in current evaluation practices and find potential solutions to those problems. Relying on ethnographic case study methodology, Study One focuses on the procedures and concerns in the teacher evaluation systems of four school districts, uncovering barriers to teacher growth. Study Two also relies on case study methodology to highlight the keys to success for a few teachers who experienced significant professional growth as a result of a good-quality evaluation event. Study Three uses an instrument—the Teacher Evaluation Profile—to explore and analyze the evaluation experiences of over 400 teachers. The result is a book that gives a clear insight into the important attributes of positive growth-producing evaluation events. Implications of these studies for future teacher evaluation programs in terms of research, policy, and practice are also included in this valuable resource book. The topic is very timely. The significance if this work is that the effort begins linking staff development participation to teacher evaluation.

Teacher learning doesn’t end with initial preparation; many insights and skills remain to be added. This book is concerned with ongoing teacher learning, its goals (Part I) and pathways (Part II). It is based on a longitudinal study of 42 teachers: 20 over their first 8 years of teaching and 22 over their first 5 years. The areas of continued teacher learning identified in our study were: vision of teaching, program planning, assessment, relevance, subject content and pedagogy, classroom organization and community, inclusion, and professional identity. The pathways of learning included informal and formal PD, teacher inquiry, and school-based learning. A key finding of our research was that, over the years, teachers learn a great deal informally. However, they do so largely on their own and under considerable stress. Teachers need more support than they currently receive, both for survival and to enhance their informal learning. Teachers can benefit significantly from external input, but their everyday learning makes them key “experts” in teaching. Accordingly, PD providers should work with teachers, utilizing their existing knowledge. This book is written for consideration by teachers, student teachers, teacher educators, PD providers, policy developers, and others interested in facilitating teacher learning. Some of us have been writing – somewhat desperately – on these ideas for years. Beck and Kosnik have given us strong evidence that the ideas are effective in practice. Abstract: ABSTRACT of thesis entitled Continuing Professional Development and Curriculum Development: Enhancing Teacher Satisfaction and Commitment submitted by Judith Leslie Crocker For the degree of Master of Education at the University of Hong Kong August 2005 Teachers have been leaving the profession at an alarming rate. Some of the symptoms that have been identified in the past are teachers' lack of satisfaction and commitment. This has often been construed as the result of teachers feeling isolated in their jobs with little perceived support from colleagues and administrators. Another issue that has reportedly affected teachers' satisfaction and commitment is the lack of control and input they have in professional and curriculum development initiatives in their schools. As a result, the initiatives have little contextual value and subsequently fall by the wayside. This concern was investigated through a qualitative interpretive case study involving teachers at an international elementary school in Hong Kong where an ongoing professional development initiative with a curriculum development focus was implemented. Teachers' feelings of satisfaction and commitment were studied in relation to this initiative, through the use of semi-structured interviews and participant observation. The emergence and establishment of conceptual codes led to the development of grounded theory. Findings were presented in narrative form, and revealed worthwhileness, collaboration, valuedness, empowerment, commitment and satisfaction as mutually interdependent key concepts for the teachers when discussing ongoing professional development. Both satisfaction and commitment were factors, to varying degrees, in the importance teachers placed on the extent they felt the initiative was worthwhile to the context of their jobs and their students. The importance of working closely with colleagues and administrators, as well as having their voices heard and respected as legitimate contributors to the school improvement process were also reported to be essential to teachers' levels of satisfaction and commitment in their jobs. Worthwhileness emerged as an issue on which teachers placed significance regarding both satisfaction and commitment. This finding had not been indicated in the literature consulted. Collaboration was reiterated as essential in determining teachers' satisfaction and commitment; feeling valued and empowered were also important factors. Commitment was not strongly recognized as an ongoing professional development consequence as previously suggested in the literature, but satisfaction was repeatedly noted as a resultant effect. Context emerged as the key to professional development initiatives, which can be best ensured when teachers are actively involved in the decision making process in planning such activities, facilitating engagement by teachers. A Commitment to Teaching: Toward More Efficacious Teacher Preparation introduces the reader to a collection of thoughtful works by authors that represent current research and thinking about teacher self-efficacy and teacher preparation. It is the intent of the book to provide the reader with current and relevant knowledge concerning preparation of committed and efficacious teachers. Teacher self-efficacy, and the presence of teacher efficacy, in teacher preparation and practice, is fundamental to preparing teachers for the public school classroom. As a construct, teacher self-efficacy beliefs are an integral aspect of the teaching process. While many authors refer to teachers’ sense of self-efficacy for teaching, meaning their beliefs about their ability to perform the actions necessary to teach, many others have identified a specific form of self-efficacy pertaining to teaching. These have been called teaching or teacher efficacy. Chapter One opens the book with a focus on the teacher commitment and self-efficacy, providing the reader with an introduction. The authors of Chapters Two-Seven present field-based research that examines the complexities efficacy and commitment in the preparation of teachers.
