Reading comprehension is a complex interactive process of forming meaning through relating what is encountered in the text to what the reader already knows. Schema theory describes the process by which readers combine their own background knowledge with the information in a text to comprehend that text. Previous research in the effect of content schema on both first and foreign language reading comprehension has provided empirical support for the hypotheses that content schema, either topic or cultural specific, has a significant impact on reading comprehension and content-based pre-reading activities can facilitate reading. However, few studies which focus on Chinese English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context have been done, especially at college level. The present study investigated the effect of content schema on Chinese EFL students reading comprehension.
