The ‘Girls’ in The BoardRoom by Ibukun Awosika In this book, I have sought to share stories of women who have actively worked to earn their seats at the table; to celebrate the women who have, despite all the challenges of gender, built successful careers in the boardroom. And to use the stories and experiences of these women as a tool to equip and inspire other women who aspire to climb the career ladder and land top positions. Sit back and enjoy the journey through the eyes of these relentless women. IBUKUN AWOSIKA is the Founder and CEO of The Chair Centre Group. She chairs and serves on a number of corporate and not for profit boards. Ibukun is a graduate of Chemistry from University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), Nigeria; an alumna of the Chief Executive Programme of Lagos Business School, the Global Executive MBA of IESE Business School, Barcelona Spain and the Global CEO Programme of Wharton, IESE and China European International Business School (CEIBS). With a keen interest in social issues, particularly the advancement of women, Ibukun is a co-founder and past chairperson of Women in Business, Management and Public Service (WIMBIZ). Ibukun is also the founder of the Christian Missionary Fund; through this faithbased organisation, she works with hundreds of missionaries spread across Nigeria to change lives with the provision of medical, educational and other supplies. Ibukun is a multiple award-winning entrepreneur and the first Nigerian recipient of the prestigious International Women Entrepreneurial Challenge (IWEC) Award as a nominee of the U.S. Department of state in 2008. She is passionate about women, youth and her beloved country, Nigeria. Ibukun is happily married to Abiodun Awosika and they are blessed with three wonderful sons

There are relatively few women in senior executive positions and on the boards of major companies. Based upon research and in the context of contemporary management debates the authors argue the business case for promoting women to these positions in order to create more value for shareholders. The book draws upon interviews with chairpersons and chief executives and includes case study material.

Women are completing MBA and Law degrees in record high numbers, but their struggle to attain director positions in corporate America continues. Although explanations for this disconnect abound, neither career counselors nor scholars have paid enough attention to the role that corporate governance plays in maintaining the gender gap in America's executive quarters. Mining corporate governance models applied at Fortune 500 companies, hundreds of Title VII discrimination cases, and proxy statements, Douglas M. Branson suggests that women have been ill-advised by experts, who tend to teach females how to act like their male, executive counterparts. Instead, women who aspire to the boardroom should focus on the decision-making processes nominating committees—usually dominated by white men—employ when voting on membership. Filled with real-life cases, No Seat at the Table opens the closed doors of the boardroom and reveals the dynamics of the corporate governance process and the double standards that often characterize it. Based on empirical evidence, Branson concludes that women have to follow different paths than men in order to gain CEO status, and as such, encourages women to make flexible, conscious, and often frequent shifts in their professional behaviors and work ethics as they climb the corporate ladder.

Occupational segregation has a major effect on the gender pay gap in the UK and deprives employers of potential recruits, a fact of particular importance in areas of skills shortages. The Committee's report examines occupational segregation and the associated tendancies for predominantly female occupations to be lower paid and undervalued. It focuses on four key aspects: the lack of knowledge about career options as a barrier to young people choosing non-traditional occupations; problems in accessing training in atypical areas; difficulties with alien or sometimes even hostile business culture; and the lack of availability of part-time or flexible working in the higher-paid occupations and at senior levels in all occupations. The Committee expresses its support for the work of the Sector Skills Councils in addressing this problem and in disseminating good practice, and argues that other organisations, such as trade associations and Regional Development Agencies, should become more active in this area. The Committee also calls on the Government to review equal pay legislation to try and make the principle of 'equal pay for work of equal value' more effective.

Japanese women, who comprise more than 40% of their country's workforce, are essential to the Japanese economy. Yet they are not typically thought of as managers, at home or abroad. Jean Renshaw challenges that perception in this pathbreaking book, showing readers where and how an "invisible evolution" is occurring in Japanese business. Traditional norms of lifetime employment, the seniority system, and the bureaucratic, tightly knit nature of Japanese industry all restrict women's entry into management. Despite these enormous barriers, the number of Japanese women managers has almost doubled in the last ten years. In an effort to discover the secrets of their success, Renshaw interviewed over 150 successful Japanese women managers. She explored family backgrounds, personal characteristics, socialization, professional experiences, and corporate cultures. This book presents her sometimes surprising discoveries. Renshaw completes the picture by surveying the history of Japanese women in management and discussing the even newer phenomenon of Japanese women who own their own businesses. An eye-opening work for managers of international firms and scholars of business and women's studies, Kimono in the Boardroom reveals the potential of the rising female managerial class to profoundly change the male-dominated culture of modern Japan.
