Changes in Science Education and Achievement is the third in a series of three volumes presenting the results of the second IEA Science Study. This volume considers the changes in science education and achievement from 1970 to 1984 in Australia, England, Finland, Hungary, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Sweden, Thailand, and the United States (the countries that took part in both the first and second IEA Science Studies). Specific chapters address such issues as the influence of attitude on science achievement, gender differences, beginning science in the elementary school, the influence of home circumstances on achievement and on educational and occupational expectations, and the teaching practices which enhance the learning of science. This book reports the design, execution, and results of a cross-national study of classrooms in eight countries. Students were administered tests and completed questionnaires at the beginning and the end of the study. Teachers also completed questionnaires. Classrooms were visited by trained observers on the average of eight times during the study. The data were analyzed in a variety of ways: simple summaries, sequential analyses, and multivariate analyses. The results of these analyses are presented and discussed. Conclusions based on these findings as well as recommendations for further research are presented.
