After reviewing their relative importance as historical sources of output growth, this commentary attempts to preview the direct effect of workforce & population ageing on multi-factor productivity, hours worked, and capital accumulation over the next four decades. The projections are based on an adapted version of the population projection model developed by the International Labour Organization. Feedback effects that accompany the projected shortage of labour & the general ageing of the population are also discussed.

In this important and timely book, researchers from different countries compare their experiences and offer contrasting views on the future of social protection. They consider the theoretical aspects of the intergenerational debate, relations between generations within the family, the living standards of elderly people, and the question of social time. For the first time in history, three and sometimes four generations are living at the same time; this book examines the new interactions between family change, labour force participation and population ageing.

The United States is in the midst of a major demographic shift. In the coming decades, people aged 65 and over will make up an increasingly large percentage of the population: The ratio of people aged 65+ to people aged 20-64 will rise by 80%. This shift is happening for two reasons: people are living longer, and many couples are choosing to have fewer children and to have those children somewhat later in life. The resulting demographic shift will present the nation with economic challenges, both to absorb the costs and to leverage the benefits of an aging population. Aging and the Macroeconomy: Long-Term Implications of an Older Population presents the fundamental factors driving the aging of the U.S. population, as well as its societal implications and likely long-term macroeconomic effects in a global context. The report finds that, while population aging does not pose an insurmountable challenge to the nation, it is imperative that sensible policies are implemented soon to allow companies and households to respond. It offers four practical approaches for preparing resources to support the future consumption of households and for adapting to the new economic landscape.

This paper examines the inter-industry and labour market occupational effects of future demographic changes in Canada, using a computable overlapping-generations model. In addition to the impact of slower labour force growth, the model captures the shift in sectoral composition of final demand of older individuals. The simulation results indicate that the growth in real GDP per capita could decline by nearly one percentage point between 2006 and 2050. The results also suggest that the equilibrium unemployment rate is likely to decline by more than two percentage points in the long run. However, the impact varies significantly at the occupational level.

We explore the implications that higher rates of older-worker participation would have for the overall size and age composition of the labour force, for the productive capacity of the economy, and for the incomes of Canadians. [...] The ensuing recommendations of the Panel, many of which were designed to increase the labour force participation of older workers, were motivated, in part, by the aging of the population and, associated with that, the impact that the slower growth of the labour force might have on standards of living. [...] With that in mind, we explore the implications that higher rates of older-worker participation would have for the overall size and age composition of the labour force, for the productive capacity of the economy, and for the incomes of Canadians. [...] The growth in female participation rates between 1976 and 2006 was important, but even so, the aging of the boom generation dominates the changes that occurred in the age structure of the labour force. [...] While a large increase in the proportion of older workers is in prospect, we note also the continued growth in the size of the overall labour force: even with no increase in the participation rates of older workers the labour force is projected to be 15 percent larger in 2036 than 2006.
