A translation of the 1902 classic in nutrition and temperature regulation physiology, previously unavailable in English. The monograph presents the original research in specific dynamic effect of food, the surface law of cooling, the effect of heat and cold on nutrition and temperature regulation, the effect of clothing and insulation on temperature regulation, and on physical and chemical aspects of thermoregulation. A biography of Rubner has been added. (Author).

Malnutrition in Western Europe? The question seems incredible, yet one-fourth of the costs caused by nutrition-related illness result at least partly from micronutrient malnutrition. The experts in this book look for the answer among recently improved data about our changing lifestyles and eating habits. They suggest that reduced calorie intake is leading to critical micronutrient status in some population groups in Western Europe. The problem stems in part from the difficulty in estimating the milder stages of undernourishment, in part from the difficulty in believing that people suffer from poor nutrition in the midst of overconsumption. The chapters specifically examine the functional consequences of the present marginal nutritional deficiency. The authors are epidemiologists, nutritionists, chemists and physicians representing nine European countries. Their contributions paint a complete picture of international expertise on micronutrient malnutrition.

Abstract: Information about energy balance in man is presented for professionals concerned with human obesity--physicians, dieticians, biochemists, physiologists, psychologists, physiotherapists, and others. The use and misuse of methods for measuring energy intake and output arediscussed. Factors affecting energy intake and factors affecting energy output are also discussed. Also considered are the composition, measurement, and control of energy stores. The treatment of obesity is explained.

Abstract: A collection of 18 authorative review papers, taken from a series of related workshops, addresses various aspects of the association of energy intake with physical activity. The papers are organized among 5 general topic areas, including energy balance studies concerning the association of inappropriate energy intakes with adaptation and reproductive competence of populations; methodological issues concerning energy balance studies and data in both adults and children; the effects of reduced energy intake on agricultural productivity, activity and metabolism, motor development, and sleep; and microeconomic and other consequences and policy implications of reduced activity and energy intake deficiencies.

This book developed from a series of conferences to facilitate the application of mathematical modeling to experimental nutrition. As nutrition science moves from prevention of gross deficiencies to identifying requirements for optimum long term health, more sophisticated methods of nutritional assessment will be needed. Collection and evaluation of kinetic data may be one such method. This books opens with chapters giving specific examples of the application of modeling techniques to vitamin A, carotenoids, folate, vitamin b-6, glycogen phosphorylase, transthyretin, amino acids, and energy metabolism. Obtaining kinetic data on internal processes is a major challenge; therefore, the text includes chapters on the use of microdialysis and ultrafiltration, use of membrane vesicles, and culture of mammary tissue. Many of the authors use the Simulation, Analysis and Modeling program which allows compartmental models to be described without specifying the required differential equations. The final sections of the book, however, present some more mathematical descriptions of physiological processes, including bioperiodicity, metabolic control, and membrane transport; discussions of some computational aspects of modeling such as parameter distributions, linear integrators and identifiability; and alternative mathematical approaches such as neural networks and graph theory. Specific, detailed examples of applications of modeling to vitamins, proteins, amino acids, and energy metabolism Novel methods for collecting kinetic data--microdialysis, ultrafiltration, membrane vesicles, and the culture of mammary tissue Mathematical treatment of complex metabolic processes including bioperiodicity, metabolic control, and membrane transport Computational approaches to distribution of kinetic parameters, evaluation of linear integrators, and identifiability Alternative mathematical approaches--neural networks and graph theory Detailed descriptions of the application of modeling to a variety of nutrients

Dietary Reference Values For Energy written by Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition and has been published by The Stationery Office this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-05-02 with Business & Economics categories.

Dietary reference values (DRVs) for energy are based on estimating the total energy expenditure (TEE) for groups of people. TEE provides a measure of the energy requirement at energy balance i.e. when energy intake matches energy expenditure. The methodology to measure TEE - the doubly labelled water (DLW) method - has advanced and as a result, the evidence base on TEE in a wide variety of population groups has expanded considerably. With the high levels of overweight and obesity currently seen in the UK and the wealth of new data now available, it was considered timely for the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) to review recommendations for the UK population. This report details the evidence and approaches SACN have considered in order to update the DRVs for energy. SACN chose a prescriptive approach to estimating energy reference values; suitable reference body weight ranges consistent with long-term good health were used to calculate energy reference values. Thus, basal metabolic rate (BMR) values were predicted using healthy reference body weights. Using this approach, if overweight groups consume the amount of energy recommended for healthy weight groups, they are likely to lose weight, whereas underweight sections of the population should gain weight towards the healthy body weight range. SACN has derived new energy reference values. For most population groups, except for infants and young children, the values have increased. DRVs should be used to assess the energy requirements for large groups of people and populations, but should not be applied to individuals due to the large variation in physical activity and energy expenditure observed between people.
