The fundamental nature of human time experience has concerned artists, poets, philosophers, and scientists throughout the ages. Any consideration of human action requires awareness of its temporal aspects. However, simply to view time in the same units and dimensions as the physicist employs in describing events robs personal time of its "lived" quality. The use of physical time concepts in the description of human events is often artificial and misleading. It fails to account for the facts that human time estimates rarely match clock and calendar time; that societies and individuals demonstrate vast differences in their constructions and uses of time; and that temporal perceptions and attitudes change within an individual both during a single day and throughout his life span. The present volume does not view time as something that is sensed in the same way that one would sense or perceive spatial or sensory stimuli. Rather, it views time as a complex set of personally experienced cognitive constructs used by individuals and cultures to account for the order, the duration, and the organization of events. The authors in this book take a strong departure from earlier psychophysical studies of a "time sense" and address themselves to the uses and elaborations of time concepts in personal and social functioning.

In contemporary psychoanalysis, the concepts of time and history have become increasingly complex. It is evident that this trend offers us an opportunity to think about the intercrossing of the different temporal dimensions imbuing the subject, an inevitable aspect of the analytic process. History is time past but what is recovered is now the working through of the subject history, which carries the mark of both passing time and re-signifying time. It is precisely the notion of history that gains different dimensions when a purely deterministic analysis is disassembled. Continuities and breaks are found between subjective time and chronological time; between the inevitable decrepitude of the biological body with the passing of time and the timelessness of the unconscious; between linear, circular times and retroactive re-signification; between facts, screen memories, memory and the work of constructing history; between the times of repetition and the times of difference; between reversible and irreversible time; between the timelessness of the unconscious and the temporalities of the ego.

The bestselling author of The Experience Effect has now turned his attention to building that most precious of all brands -- you. In an economy where so many people are struggling, trying to recreate themselves and build new skillsets, the value of a personal brand becomes paramount. As we market ourselves for new careers or take ourselves in new directions, we need to think of ourselves as a brand. What are we projecting? How do those qualities, traits or experiences that we project create a brand that works for us? In other words, how do we create a Personal Experience Effect? Peppered with relevant examples, the book defines what it means to be a brand. The choices we make, their rational and emotional components, the energy we expend towards their projection...all these and more go into creating our personal brands. How do we keep it all conscious and consistent? A personal brand, like any good brand, needs to be consciously managed and controlled. Occasionally, as with corporate brands, a measure of fire-fighting may be required. This book shows us the what, the why and the how. The Personal Experience Effect is not only about big picture strategy. Practical details are discussed too. For example, an entire section is dedicated to creating the perfect elevator pitch. How can a personal brand work not just for today but into the future? Can a personal brand be enhanced over time? What measures of circumspection are required in our digital age, when memories can remain online long after they've been erased in our minds? The author shares this and more, honestly and caringly, narrating personal experiences as well as discussing celebrity brands. With inspiring examples and attention to detail, The Personal Experience Effect shows you how to win support to define, build, and nurture your personal brand. Jim Joseph's eminently readable book helps you Be Who You Want To Be.

In "Incwadi Yami; or, Twenty Years' Personal Experience in South Africa," J. W. Matthews offers an illuminating firsthand account of his two-decade-long sojourn in Southern Africa. Matthews'Äô dual role as an observer and participant allows him to provide nuanced insights that intersect faith, politics, and indigenous cultures, offering a unique perspective rarely documented in the colonial narratives of his time. For readers interested in colonial history, cultural studies, or personal narratives, Matthews' "Incwadi Yami" is an essential text. It not only serves as a testament to the human experience amidst sociopolitical upheaval but also enhances understanding of the region's historical fabric. This book is a must-read for anyone seeking to grasp the intricate legacies of colonization in South Africa.
