"The rules of the world are changing. It is time for the rules of teaching and teachers' work to change with them." This is the challenge which Andy Hargreaves sets out in his new book on teachers' work and culture in the postmodern world. Drawing on his current research with teachers at all levels, Hargreaves shows through their own vivid words what teaching is really like, how it is already changing, and why. He argues that the structures and cultures of teaching need to change even more if teachers are not to be trapped by guilt, pressed by time and overburdened by decisions imposed upon them. Provocative yet practical, this book is written for teachers and those who work with teachers, and for researchers who want to understand teaching better in the postmodern age.

Toward A Critical Politics Of Teacher Thinking written by Joe Kincheloe and has been published by Praeger this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993-03-30 with Education categories.

This book calls for a new type of teacher education that empowers teachers to be self-directed professionals. Joe Kincheloe believes that the current trend of teaching teachers to learn an empirical knowledge base which they then implement in their classrooms is demeaning to teachers and teaches them not to think. He cites, for example, the emphasis on lesson plan format, the writing of behavioral objectives, and pre-packaged activities. One way to achieve thoughtful empowerment is through critical action research, or teaching practitioner thinking. The author illustrates the roots of his theory in Deweyan learning through action and in the more modern active learning approach. He then applies Piagetian constructivism and critical hermeneutics to develop a post-formal model of practitioner thought, which he labels critical constructivism. Kincheloe theorizes on the ways such a model would impact teaching and learning in a college of education. Autonomous, self-reflective, critical thinking teachers who take their profession seriously must understand the political consequences of this approach, states the author, as it will change the face of the school and elicit a backlash of opposition. While the book develops a unique vision of practitioner thinking, it is also firmly grounded in the realities of school life and is written in an accessible style that is not geared to one specific group.

"Make something new, Derrida says, that is how deconstruction happens. This book exemplifies such a move in the way it addresses the stuck places of practitioner oriented research with its rational, intentional agents seeking to empower both teacher self and students. An example of putting postmodernism to work in educational research, the book asks hard questions about necessary complicities.....rounded in nursery teaching and math education, it attempts to develop a better language toward a more complicated understanding of what knowledge means.... without reverting to the quick and narrow scientism of the past." - Patti Lather, Ohio State University * How can we move forward from or develop traditional approaches to Action Research which have dominated teacher research for many years now? * How can teachers work at improving their teaching when there are so many different understandings of what education is trying to achieve? * In which ways can post-structuralism, which has had such a major impact in other disciplines, offer practical support to teachers developing their own professional practices? A premise of much teacher research is that reflection on practice can lead to a development of that practice. Such reflection, it is purported, enables the practitioner in organising the complexity of the teaching situation, with a particular emphasis on how 'monitoring of change' can be converted to 'control of change'. This book questions the notion of construing developing practice as 'aiming for an ideal' and suggests that such a pursuit has a questionable track record. The very desire for control, and the difficulties encountered in trying to document it can cloud ourvision from the very complexities we seek to capture. The book offers detailed discussion of teacher research enquiries carried out in the context of masters and doctoral degrees. It focuses in particular on how the reflective writing generated by the teacher might build towards an assertion of professional identity through which professional demands are mediated.
