Excerpt from The Psychology of the Teacher: And Introductory Study This study has grown organically out of my Norwegian work in child psychology (50, In going over the inter national literature which had more or less direct bearing upon my problems I was frequently confronted with the remark: This result is probably due to the influence of the teacher. In my own work also I very soon found it necessary to seek refuge in this mysterious sesame whenever I attempted an explanation, and special statistical and psychological data failed to solve the problem in hand. The fact (witnessed by all studies from all countries of children's ideals) that by far the greater part of the children gain their ideals from the curriculum, and the relation of this to the results of recent studies on imitation and suggestion,1 indicated to me that the problem of the role of the teacher was one which stood in need of immediate investigation by all available means and methods.
