For you to be here today reading this requires a mind-boggling series of lucky breaks, starting with the Big Bang and ending in your own conception. So it's not surprising that we persist in thinking that we're in with a chance, whether we're playing the lottery or working out the likelihood of extra-terrestrial life. In Chance, a (not entirely) random selection of the New Scientist's sharpest minds provide fascinating insights into luck, randomness, risk and probability. From the secrets of coincidence to placing the perfect bet, the science of random number generation to the surprisingly haphazard decisions of criminal juries, it explores these and many other tantalising questions. Following on from the bestselling Nothing and Question Everything, this book will open your eyes to the weird and wonderful world of chance - and help you see when some things, in fact, aren't random at all.

Beyond Belief written by John L. Casti and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-06 with Science categories.

How can we predict and explain the phenomena of nature? What are the limits to this knowledge process? The central issues of prediction, explanation, and mathematical modeling, which underlie all scientific activity, were the focus of a conference organized by the Swedish Council for the Planning and Coordination of Research, held at the Abisko Research Station in May of 1989. At this forum, a select group of internationally known scientists in physics, chemistry, biology, economics, sociology and mathematics discussed and debated the ways in which prediction and explanation interact with mathematical modeling in their respective areas of expertise. Beyond Belief is the result of this forum, consisting of 11 chapters written specifically for this volume. The multiple themes of randomness, uncertainty, prediction and explanation are presented using (as vehicles) several topical areas from modern science, such as morphogenetic fields, Boscovich covariance, and atmospheric variability. This multidisciplinary examination of the foundational issues of modern scientific thought and methodology will offer stimulating reading for a very broad scientific audience.

Introduction To Random Time And Quantum Randomness written by Kai Lai Chung and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Science categories.

This book is made up of two essays on the role of time in probability and quantum physics. In the first one, K L Chung explains why, in his view, probability theory starts where random time appears. This idea is illustrated in various probability schemes and the deep impact of those random times on the theory of the stochastic process is shown. In the second essay J-C Zambrini shows why quantum physics is not a regular probabilistic theory, but also why stochastic analysis provides new tools for analyzing further the meaning of Feynman's path integral approach and a number of foundational issues of quantum physics far beyond what is generally considered. The role of the time parameter, in this theory, is critically re-examined and a fresh way to approach the long-standing problem of the quantum time observable is suggested.

This unique book explores the definition, sources and role of randomness. A joyful discussion with many non-mathematical and mathematical examples leads to the identification of three sources of randomness: randomness due to irreversibility which inhibits us from extracting whatever rules may underlie a process, randomness due to our inability to have infinite power (chaos), and randomness due to many interacting systems. Here, all sources are found to have something in common: infinity. The discussion then moves to the physical system (our universe). Through the quantum mechanical character of small scales, the second law of thermodynamics and chaos, randomness is shown to be an intrinsic property of nature - this is consistent with the three sources of randomness identified above. Finally, an explanation is given as to why rules and randomness cannot exist by themselves, but instead have to coexist. Many examples are presented, ranging from pure mathematical to natural and social processes, that clearly demonstrate how the combination of rules and randomness produces the world we live in.

A physicist and science writer takes the reader on a journey from physics and biology to psychology in search of the nature of chance. Chance plays a greater role in our lives than most of us suspect--or can accept. Though we like to imagine that we are in control, science says otherwise. This witty, informative introduction to the unnerving power of chance explores the randomness at the core of reality and discusses its profound implications. Physicist and science journalist Florian Aigner helps us to understand a key scientific paradox: On the one hand science uses precise mathematical formulae to reliably explain the natural world, but on the other it can neither predict nor plan the future. In a very readable, humorous approach, the author uses entertaining stories from Schrödinger's cat and Skinner's pigeons to superstitious baseball players and the weirdest game of monopoly ever played. All of which demonstrate the role that chance plays in sickness and health, failure and success, elementary particles, the human genome, the weather, and psychology. Understanding how randomness works and the law of large numbers may increase our chances of success. But in the end, the author says, we would all be a lot happier by accepting that the future just cannot be perfectly planned. His advice? Press play and enjoy the ride.

For fifty years, innovations have taken on a new dimension: the Internet, DNA sequencing, genomic manipulations, advances in transhumanism, nanotechnologies ... and much more. These recent innovations are not without addressing new issues whose consequences are as important as irreversible. The innovator, of whom Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg are emblematic contemporary figures, appears as a personality as brilliant as he is destructive, who aspires to change the world regardless of the violence that may ensue. With this then, emerges the need to establish responsible innovation, in which the innovator should be accountable for his actions and review his position as a hero. To establish this new ethic, philosophy is a necessary recourse, since it questions, among other things, the self-control of the Stoics, the prudence of Aristotle, respect of Kant, the will power of Nietzsche and the power of Foucault.

Exploring Randomness written by Gregory J. Chaitin and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Computers categories.

This essential companion to Chaitin's successful books The Unknowable and The Limits of Mathematics, presents the technical core of his theory of program-size complexity. The two previous volumes are more concerned with applications to meta-mathematics. LISP is used to present the key algorithms and to enable computer users to interact with the authors proofs and discover for themselves how they work. The LISP code for this book is available at the author's Web site together with a Java applet LISP interpreter. "No one has looked deeper and farther into the abyss of randomness and its role in mathematics than Greg Chaitin. This book tells you everything hes seen. Don miss it." John Casti, Santa Fe Institute, Author of Goedel: A Life of Logic.'
