Excerpt from Social Studies in English Literature The unity of the following studies consists in their common viewpoint, each essay tracing the relation between a certain body of literature and some aspects of the social conditions out of which it grew. This unity of idea is due to no attempt to illustrate the now generally accepted theory that literature is essentially social in nature and function, but results solely from the pedestrian effort to "see the object as in itself it really is." In the history of the essay and in the English poetry of the Revolution the connection between literature and life on which the criticism of our day emphatically insists is so obvious that it seems impossible to come to a full understanding either of this art-form or of these poets without recognizing the social affiliations of each. Though conscious of many debts to many friends in writing these papers, I can mention only three. Miss Julia B. The times were still martial and restless; men still wore swords in pacific assemblies; the intellect Of the age was a fermenting intellect; it was a revolutionary intellect. And comedy itself, colored by the moving pageantries Of life, was more sinewy, more audacious in its movements; spoke with something more Of an impassioned tone; and was hung with draperies more rich, more voluminous, more picturesque. On the other hand, the age of the Athenian Menander, or the English Congreve, though still an unsettled age, was far less insecure in its condition Of police, and far less showy in its exterior aspect. In England it is true that a pictur esque costume still prevailed the whole people were still draped1 professionally; each man's dress pro claimed his calling; and so far it might be said, natio comoedia est. But the characteristic and dividing spirit had fled, whilst the forms survived; and those middle men had universally arisen whose equivocal relations to different employments broke down the strength Of contrast between them. Com edy, therefore, was thrown more exclusively upon the interior man upon the nuances Of his nature, Or upon the finer spirit of his manners. It is as present as the air, as concrete as bread, and far more necessary to human civilization than steam or petrol. The proverbial Philistine who refuses to see a play that will not make him laugh practices criticism of the most formidable kind and reveals in that practice all he is. For consider the implications of his critical reaction: the utter lack of humane sympathies, the stum of all gentler influences, the hard determination to give no part of his earnings for anything that neither stirs his senses nor flatters his consciousness of superiority. Consider, fur thermore, the forces in his civilization that have made him what he is: the insistence on mechanical values, the steely ferocities of business competition, the militant subordination of all the elements of life to one coarse and impoverishing kind of success. I could go further and point out how this Philistine's lack of a subtle shame in his attitude, indeed his brazen pride in it, demonstrates the failure on the part of the intellectuals of his age and country to create a cultural atmosphere in which he would be forced, despite himself, into an uneasy awareness of the poverty of his own soul. And I could proceed to an analysis of the impotence of these intellectuals. Or else, I could select another critical reaction of our average business man: his moral indignation over a literary or dramatic treatment of sex, and I could readily derive that from his own furtive grossness or em bittered self-repression. But it is already clear that the humblest critical remark made by a random man or woman in any crowd you please has implications that can sear the soul or cry to heaven.
