Excerpt from The Socialist Argument The questions which today are pressing most earnestly for solution are those relating to Economics; they are occupying the attention of every thoughtful mind. Owing to the complex nature of our civilization these questions are considerably involved, and unless serious and prolonged study is given them they re main confusing, if not apparently insolvable. How ever, a thorough and unbiased study of the funda mental economic principles involved reveals not only the imperative necessity of an industrial democracy, but also Shows that Socialism is the widest possible application of common sense to human relationships. It is well to recognize the fact that, into whatever social state a people are born, that people are in a degree environed by a web of customs, beliefs, tradi tions, laws, etc., which tend to bind them to the past and to, prejudice them against it ovations. As we ac quaint ourselves with the law of development, how ever, we must recognize that this law is constantly Operative not only in the inorganic and the organic worlds, but in social affairs as well. Excerpt from A Critical Examination of Socialism The subject is one, however, which, if it were to be treated exhaustively, would demand a series of volumes rather than a series Of chapters, and the arguments here set forth are written in a species Of short-hand, and at almost every turn are susceptible Of indefinite amplification. But for practical pur poses a short book which is suggestive is likely to be more use than a long one, whose argument, while more complete, might be less easily grasped and less easily available for controversial and educative purposes. What I contemplate doing at some future time is to reproduce the main argument Of this volume in a more purely constructive and less controversial form, and, having thus sketched its various parts in outline, as an introduction, to elaborate each part separately in subsequent portions Of the work. In especial, the various forms and gradations Of individual manual labor would be analyzed more fully than it has been possible to analyze them here; and a Similarly minute treatment would be applied to the directive faculties, from their simplest and most rudimentary up to their highest forms. The dynamics of motive, their relation to the general structure Of society, the difierent kinds Of life and effort imposed by nature on any society that aims at any kind of civilization, and many other subjects which need not be here specified, would all, in the same way, receive separate treatment. Excerpt from The New Socialism: An Impartial Inquiry The present book occupies, so far as I am aware, new ground among English books on Socialism. The larger historical books on the subject stop short of recent years, and leave unchronicled much Socialist thought and action of the utmost importance. My aim has been to give as briefly and fairly as possible an account of the Socialist movement over the world during the last ten years. Like everything else, Socialism has undergone a process of change, and must be studied in the works of its latest authorities. Extreme utterances of individuals have been largely disregarded. In such a movement as Socialism much exaggeration was inevitable. But Socialism has its great thinkers and students, men as candid, as thoughtful, and as earnest as any to be found in other camps. These thinkers are constructive as well as destructive. They are not afraid to acknowledge the immense difficulties that have to be conquered ere the goal is reached, and they have taken them up in earnest, admitting in many cases that they are not yet completely solved. That Socialism is a movement full of mighty import to mankind, and that the questions which it raises may at any moment present themselves in their most practical form, is now obvious to all. It is only by understanding what Socialists ask for, and why they ask it, by studying their views and arguments in their best, most considered and most impressive form that any fruitful discussion can be carried on. It is in this spirit that I have endeavoured to set forth the main points in the recent literature of Socialism. The chief books published on the Continent as well as the English literature of the subject have been thoroughly examined, and every effort has been made to secure a just and accurate account of the main issues. The periodical literature of Socialism has also been investigated to the best of my ability. It is so extensive that an absolutely complete knowledge is unattainable, but I hope that few important omissions will be found. In the Supplement I have given chapters on Revolutionary Syndicalism; Recent Developments of American Socialism; and Notes on Australian Socialism. Excerpt from Instead of Socialism: And Papers on Two Democratic Delusions Just as 'Christians, ' in all ages, have confused Christianity with what is not the teaching of Jesus of Nazareth, so have Socialists confused Socialism with what is not Socialism. In the following papers I have avoided attributing to Socialists sentiments which are no more peculiar to them than to many of their opponents. It is no argument to talk of Brotherhood and Altruism as characteristic of Socialism. It is likewise no argument to assert, as many Socialists do, that Socialism is synonymous with Christianity. Socialists may, or may not, be brotherly and altruistic. They may, or may not, believe Christianity to be synonymous with Socialism. But all this does not define Socialism for us. It is as illogical to credit Socialism with the intentions and beliefs of some Socialists as to credit the Roman Church with the virtues of some of its saints. Excerpt from Mediaeval Socialism It is obvious that this argument cannot be gainsaid and yet at the same time we may not be in any way illogical in venturing on an inquiry as to whether, in centuries not wholly dissimilar from our own, the mind of man worked itself out along lines parallel in some degree to contemporary systems of thought. Man's life differs, yet are the categories which mould his ideas eternally the same. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Socialist Argument The author of this book is a man who entered the mercantile business with his father, as a lad of twelve. He has spent fifty-three years in that business, and has built up in this industrial Massachusetts town a well equipped and successful Department store. He is a good example of the middle-class American business man. Though this man's life has been spent in the market-place, yet his deeper interests have been ethical rather than financial, and he has earnestly and fearlessly investigated for himself the great social and economic problems that press upon us. For these things we believe he deserves credit; and it is to be hoped that we have passed the stage where the fact that his study and thinking has led him to become a Socialist will in any wise detract, in the minds of candid people, anything from the credit due. We feel sure that the open-minded reader will find these essays as well worth while to him as they have been to us, Mr. Hitchcock's fellow citizens, to whom they were first read. And this book is timely, for it must be recognized that the questions herein discussed are the questions that press hardest today for solution. Sooner or later these social and economic problems must be faced and solved. Mr. Hitchcock's clear-cut Socialist Argument must be met by the thoughtful, and successfully refuted or finally accepted. Excerpt from Catholicism and Socialism Socialism is rapidly becoming the accepted creed of the masses. A century of commercialist economics and materialist propaganda is producing the inevitable result. A people dechristianized, neglected, and oppressed by governing classes that will not govern, by selfish and irresponsible "captains of industry," has naturally turned to the only doctrine that seems to promise hope, Revolutionary Socialism. Yet the Catholic Church, the divinely-appointed guardian of Truth and Justice, while sternly rebuking the neglect of duty that has created this social unrest, must also oppose Revolutionary Socialism; for the reaction has over-passed justice, and the proposed remedy is almost worse than the disease. In the pamphlets collected in this volume some of the points of opposition between Christianity and Socialism are indicated. The arguments put forward by no means exhaust the case against Socialism, but they will be found of service in opposing that specious doctrine, which is seducing many of the noblest among the working-classes of England. Excerpt from A Plain Examination of Socialism In Book I., I state certain fundamental facts of human nature, as well as certain economic principles which I believe to have the character of immutable natural laws. In Book II. Is given a brief description of the present system of human society with respect to its economic dealings; the socialistic attack on this present system, the weakness of the objections thereto, and the insuperable difficulties of remedying them. In Book III we step into the socialists' camp, take up their general proposals, examine them in detail, and show what, if anything, they must lead to. I have endeavoured to treat the subject strictly from an economic standpoint, believing that socialism in any form can only be combated successfully by presenting valid economic arguments against it. Excerpt from Appeal Socialist Classics The pamphlets in this series are composed, in the main, of selections from the published work of Socialist writers, mostly of the present day. In some of them, particularly "Socialist Documents" and "Socialism and Government," the writings used are mainly of collective, rather than individual authorship; while the Historical Sketch is the composition of the editor. To the selections given, the editor has added explanatory and connecting paragraphs, welding the fragments into a coherent whole. The aim is the massing together in concise and systematic form, of what has been most clearly and pertinently said, either by individual Socialist writers or by committees speaking for the party as a whole, on all of the main phases of Socialism. In their finished form they might, with some appropriateness, be termed mosaics: each pamphlet is an arrangement of parts from many sources according to a unitary design. Most of the separate pieces are, however, in the best sense classics: they are expressions of Socialist thought which, by general approval, have won authoritative rank. A classic, according to James Russell Lowell, is of itself "something neither ancient nor modern"; even the most recent writing may be considered classic if, for the mood it depicts or the thought it frames, it unites matter and style into an expression of approved merit. For the choice of selections the editor is alone responsible. Doubtless for some of the subjects treated another editor would have chosen differently. The difficulty indeed has been in deciding what to omit; for the mass of Socialist literature contains much that may be rightly called classic which obviously could not have been included in these brief volumes. The pamphlets in the series are as follows: 1. The Elements of Socialism. 2. The Science of Socialism, 3. Socialism: A Historical Sketch. 4. Socialist Documents. 5. Socialism and Government. 6. Questions and Answers. 7. Socialism and Organized Labor. 8. Socialism and the Farmer. 9. Socialism and Social Reform. 10. The Tactics of Socialism. 11. The Socialist Appeal. 12. Socialism in Verse.
