A logic is presented for indicative conditionals, based around an extension of intuitionistic logic to allow for both verified and unverified assertions. This logic naturally gives rise to three forms of epistemic modality, corresponding to must, may and will."

Temporal Logic: From Ancient Ideas to Artificial Intelligence deals with the history of temporal logic as well as the crucial systematic questions within the field. The book studies the rich contributions from ancient and medieval philosophy up to the downfall of temporal logic in the Renaissance. The modern rediscovery of the subject, which is especially due to the work of A. N. Prior, is described, leading into a thorough discussion of the use of temporal logic in computer science and the understanding of natural language. Temporal Logic: From Ancient Ideas to Artificial Intelligence thus interweaves linguistic, philosophical and computational aspects into an informative and inspiring whole.

Perspectives on Time deals with the problem of time from different perspectives such as logic, physics and philosophy. It contains 18 previously unpublished papers, written by philosophers from various European countries, as well as a large introduction about the history and the main situation in the respective fields today. The prominent issues which are addressed in this book concern the direction of time, the reality of tenses, the objectivity of becoming, the existence in time, and the logical structures of reasoning about time. The papers have been written based on different approaches, partly depending on whether the authors subscribe to an A-theory or a B-theory of time. Audience: Due to the broad variety of approaches the book contains important contributions both for philosophers, philosophers of science, logicians and for scientists working in the field of language and AI.

Here is a unique work of reference. Not only does it unite studies which explore the syntax and semantics of tense or modality, but it is the first book of its kind to embrace the interaction of tense and modality within a coherent generative model.

Current semantic fieldwork research has shown that the study of modality cannot be conducted via translation alone, yet much of what we know about modal expressions across the world’s language is still translation-based. This book aims to facilitate the study of modality across more diverse languages and a wider participant base by explaining and illustrating a nuanced set of methods, including storyboards, questionnaires, corpora research, experimental tasks, as well as a discussion of practical semantic fieldwork techniques. The methodological protocols tested and employed by the authors on underdescribed languages - spanning seven different language families - are intended to be applicable as cross-linguistic tools, while also indicating the successes and challenges of their contributions. Expanding the study of modality to a wider set of underdescribed languages will undoubtedly bring new insights into our theoretical understanding of modality and deepen our understanding of a cross-linguistic typology of modal expressions.

Abstract: "By a rough analogy, we can consider discourse to be like soup. When eating soup one is confronted by a dish in a form which is not conducive to isolating individual ingredients although some, e.g. salt, are more obviously abused than others. Likewise, when interpreting discourse the individual constraints which went into its construction are hard to discern but some, e.g. use of anaphora, are easy to spot when under- or over-applied. We can improve our broth expertise by cooking our own soup, experimenting with the recipe and examining the resulting liquid. By so doing, one can begin to isolate flavours or textures characteristic of certain ingredients. Again, the analogy holds for discourse where by generating a series of discourses and altering the constraints which govern those generations one can begin to see the effects that different constraints have, effects which it is difficult or impossible to perceive from the interpretation direction only. This thesis examines how one constraint, aspect, affects discourse: a preliminary experiment into the psychological plausibility of aspectual classes is carried out and the results compared to those classes generally used in the literature. A treatment of aspect based on Moens and Steedman [MS88] is then proposed and investigated before being extended and used in the treatment of tense, temporal connectives, perfectives and progressives. Tense trees [HS94] are introduced and appropriated in a reduced form to provide intersentential relations. As discussed above, the generation direction can be the source of much insight into the interpretation direction and this is shown throughout the thesis. Finally, an implementation based on the interpretation and generation of discourses describing the movement of staff around the Computer Laboratory is described and assessed."

This edited book examines conditionals from a number of interdisciplinary perspectives, drawing on research from fields as diverse as linguistics, psychology, philosophy and logic. Across 13 chapters, the authors not only investigate and examine various commonly-held perceptions about conditionals, but they also challenge many of the assumptions underpinning current conditionals scholarship, setting an agenda for future research. Based in part on the papers presented at a unique international summer school - Conditionals in Paris - this volume represents the cutting edge in the study of conditionals, and it will be of interest to scholars in fields including linguistics and psychology, semiotics, philosophy and logic, and artificial intelligence.

Subjunctive Conditionals written by Michela Ippolito and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-13 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

A proposal for a compositional semantics for subjunctive (or would) conditionals in English. In this book, Michela Ippolito proposes a compositional semantics for subjunctive (or would) conditionals in English that accounts for their felicity conditions and the constraints on the satisfaction of their presuppositions by capitalizing on the occurrence of past tense morphology in both antecedent and consequent clauses. Very little of the extensive literature on subjunctive conditionals tries to account for the meaning of these sentences compositionally or to relate this meaning to their linguistic form; this book fills that gap, connecting the different lines of research on conditionals. Ippolito's proposal will be of interest both to linguists and to philosophers concerned with conditionals and modality more generally. Ippolito reviews previous analyses of counterfactuals and subjunctive conditionals in the work of David Lewis, Robert Stalnaker, Angelika Kratzer, and others; considers the contrast between future simple past subjunctive conditionals and future past perfect subjunctive conditionals; presents a proposal for subjunctive conditionals that addresses puzzles left unsolved by previous proposals; reviews a number of presupposition triggers showing that they fit the pattern predicted by her proposal; and discusses an asymmetry between the past and the future among subjunctive conditionals, arguing that the best account of our linguistic intuitions must include an indeterministic view of the world.
