A striking series of events of the past two decades have tended to raise questions about the exercise of teaching authority in the Catholic Church. The Second Vatican Council, the Encyclical Humanae Vitae, the controversy over Hans Kÿng's book on infallibility and the subsequent declaration of Rome that he could no longer teach as a Catholic theologian, the colloquium to which Edward Schillebeeckx was summoned by the Vatican, the pastoral letter of the American bishops on the question of nuclear warfare--have all stimulated a lively discussion of the claims of the Catholic hierarchy to authoritative magisterium. With all the abundance of literature on the subject, a book was still needed that would offer an up-to-date, systematic presentation of Catholic thinking about the nature and function of this magisterium. This is what the present volume sets out to provide. It takes as its point of departure the belief which a great many Christians besides Catholics share, namely, that the Church of Christ is maintained in the truth of the Gospel by the Holy Spirit. It then examines the various ministries by which the Gospel has been handed on and interpreted for each generation of believers, looking especially to the role of the bishops, and among them, of the Bishop of Rome, in settling disputes about the faith. Questions concerning papal infallibility, the response called for by papal encyclicals, the critical role of Catholic theologians vis-a-vis the magisterium, are treated in the light of current theological literature, with the non-specialist reader in mind.

Ein von religiöser und darüberhinaus weltanschaulicher Pluralität geprägter Schulalltag erfordert zunehmend auch ein Aufbrechen der traditionellen Strukturen des Religionsunterrichts. Die Relevanz interreligiösen Lernens und eines entsprechenden Kompetenzerwerbs im Lehramtsstudium der Katholischen Theologie liegt folglich auf der Hand. Ausgehend von der im theoretischen Diskurs proklamierten Annahme, dass der praktische interreligiöse Dialog den Königsweg zur Anbahnung diverser interreligiöser Kompetenzen darstellt, steht die Umsetzung eines solchen Dialoges im Lehramtsstudium im Fokus der in diesem Buch thematisierten empirisch angelegten Studie. Hierbei dient die schriftbasierte Methode des Scriptural Reasoning zur Anbahnung einer Interaktion zwischen Personen mit verschiedenen Religionen und Weltanschauungen als Forschungsgegenstand. Erkenntnisleitend ist die Frage, wie sich ein direktes interreligiöses Lernen im universitären Kontext in die Praxis umsetzen lässt, und was es dabei zu beachten gibt. Dies wird durch Forschungsergebnisse fundiert diskutiert und reflektiert. Katharina Welling ist seit 2017 Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Lehrstuhl für Religionspädagogik, religiöse Erwachsenenbildung und Homiletik der Universität Bonn. Sie absolvierte ein Lehramtsstudium der Katholischen Theologie und Germanistik an der TU Dortmund, wo sie von 2015 bis 2017 als Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Lehrstuhl für Religionsdidaktik arbeitete. Der Abschluss der Promotion erfolgte 2020 an der Universität zu Köln.

Das Projekt wurde aus dem Diskussionszusammenhang des Schwerpunktprogramms "Verwendungszusammenhange sozialwissenschaft licher Ergebnisse" der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft entwickelt, von Bernd Dewe und Frank-Olaf Radtke beantragt und in der Zeit yom 1. 1. 1989 bis zum 30. 5. 1991 von der DFG gefordert. Mitarbeiter des Projekts waren Erich Schafer (1. 1.-31. 5. 1989), Albert Scherr (1. 1.-30. 9. 1989), Michael Bommes (1. 6. 1989-31. 5. 1991) und Thomas Kurtz (1. 3. 1990-31. 5. 1991). Beraten haben das Projekt Hans-Erich Webers (Zentrum fur Lehrerbildung) und Wilfried Ferchhoff (Fakultat fur Padagogik) der Universitat Bielefeld.
